(Tony Blair is probably wishing he had stepped down instead hanging around to have these fund raising scandals hit him. Too bad for him his name isn't Bill Clinton and he doesn't have 60% approval ratings! That would help him leg it out. Will Labor be replaced by the "Labor-Lite" Tories? Only time will tell.)

From the Daily Mail:

Quote:
Labour's chief fundraiser Lord Levy has been arrested over allegations he tried to cover up the cash for honours scandal.

In a development that stunned Downing Street, the peer, a close friend of Tony Blair, was detained over new offences of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

He is alleged to have lied to police and attempted to conceal or suppress potentially vital evidence.

Tony Blair’s premiership was on the verge of complete paralysis on Thursday night after it emerged that he was interviewed a second time in secret by police investigating the cash for honours scandal.

Detectives questioned the Prime Minister for nearly an hour in Downing Street over claims that key aides tried to cover-up the affair.

In an extraordinary twist, the meeting last Friday was kept under wraps at the request of Scotland Yard until Thursday.

The news sent a fresh shockwave through the Government and the party, and left ministers in despair at what they say is a growing disaster that could destroy Labour.

With Downing Street looking increasingly like a crime scene and less like a seat of government, senior figures painted a devastating portrait of a discredited administration that is falling apart by the day.

Wasn't Blair first elected to parliament (or whatever the term is) in the 80s? And Prime Minister for like four years before Bush become President? Didn't he also support Clinton what with the Kosovo War, a SIGNIFICANTLY more controversial act than Iraq?

And I thought his politics were fairly left for the Labour party?

Blair was elected to the Commons in 1983 as MP for Sedgefield. One of the major reasons why NuLabour still hold many seats up in many parts of northern England is because of their electorate's almost blind loyalty to "Labour". In those parts of the country, if you put a donkey wearing a Labour rosette up for election it would get in. I suppose where I live is similar but it's a very safe Tory seat.

Not really. Many left-wing Labour people call Blair a right-wing nut-job but really he's an authoritarian centrist.

Ah yes, Tony "whipping boy" Blair. The perpetual goat among sheep. Sometimes I'm almost moved to sympathy for the poor bloke.

But then I read about PM Bush, and how the Yanks bash him every which way, and realize they're far more cruel than we are, "Chimpus Khan" indeed ! !!

I live in America, but that does not prove that I am an American at all. You must live in the UK where that countries Prime minister has a major crush on the USA presidents.

I'm American as well. The war in Kosovo was also pretty controversial over here, but it wasn't based on a lie. Chimpus managed to rally the Americans to support him by asserting that there was a connection between 9/11 and Iraq, and that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. The Brits, who seem to still be able to think for themselves, weren't buying this for the most part (so it seems). The September Dossier is also pretty troubling, since it was never substantiated and (as far as I can recall) was based mostly on a very dated paper by a graduate student or something like that. I really don't know why Blair went along with it, the Downing Street Memo seems to be pretty damning against both Bush and Blair in that regard.

I don't know about what's happenned in Brittain since the invasion, but Bush is screwed in a number of ways. First, we had the Plame Affair. The warrantless wiretapping also appears to be an impeachable offense, as does detaining enemy combatants (including some US citizens) without charges, access to legal counsel, or access to the Red Cross. The so-called Black Sites (enemy prison camps that are not reported by the U.S.) are also a problem, as are the known occurrences of torture by U.S. soldiers in Iraq.

I don't know what it would take for a no-confidence vote against Blair, but it seems like the Downing Street Memo and September Dossier should be enough.

We don't have a no-confidence vote; however we do have impeachment as a possibility. I think that the Dems are reluctant to move forward on impeachment for a number of reasons. First, Pelosi would appear self-serving if she allowed articles of impeachment against Bush, Cheney, and nearly the entire cabinet to move forward since that would leave her next in line to be president. Second (and this seems to be the more problematic issue) we just impeached and tried our last president (Clinton) over utter crap. The U.S. sort of became a laughing stock for impeaching a president over receiving oral sex in the White House. Still, Bush really deserves it, especially because he is talking about escalating U.S. troops in Iraq (whether or not the Senate passes the nonbinding resolution against it) and invading Iran (not quite sure where the army would come from for that one). I don't think that the Dems would annoy anyone by impeaching him since his approval rating is almost as low as Nixon's when he was impeached.

Basically, we've been waiting for Blair to go ever since the Dodgy Dossier, but he won't move even though there has been a few scandals and other things happening as well like Cash-for-Honours and prison botch-jobs. Basically, Blair just won't let go. We have no history of impeaching Prime Ministers in the United Kingdom so the only realistic way that he will go is that he either resigns (unlikely as he is obsessed with power); his own party drags him out of office (this is taking forever and they are not doing it properly) or the General Election in a few years time, whereupon he will then be replaced by David Cameron - a leader so obviously without charisma that he is basically the lightweight version of Tony Blair. It's not like there is much hope in the other parties: I used to be interested in the Liberal Democrats but these days they're a waste of time. The United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) is a Eurosceptic libertarian party. Its leader, Nigel Farage, is a bit squinty-eyed but their message is basically sound. UKIP basically target themselves to a Tory-voting Middle England that is sick of excessive government regulation and would like very much to leave the EU. The UK Independence Party has no Commons representation as of yet but it does have some seats in the European Parliament. Hopefully they will gain some seats in a few years.

But to round up: politics in this country is a joke. With the exception of the Green Party (who I don't like anyway), the BNP (who are a party of bigots and racists) and UKIP (who are really a bit too small and ineffective) there is no real difference in the three main parties of Labour, Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. They're all pretty much on the same centre ground. Which puts many voters in an increasingly apathetic state.

And here I've probably said enough about British politics for the time being.

The common comparison of George Bush to an animal is disturbing because it is designed to be dehumanizing. History, and events of today show that when a person is dehumanized they are far easier to hate.

Comparing Bush to an animal is very insulting to animals!

:( My beliefs are not so much animated by a defense of George Bush but a defense of humanity. It would not be right to constantly use words mocking Bill Clinton in such a manner either.

I am afraid I am simply coming from an entirely different perspective here. I know I am not alone in the world because I have heard other learned persons say the same concerns.

Alrighty. And nope, I live in Louisiana. It's a pretty sure bet that someone that lives in America is most likely an American, just like anybody that lives in America and dislikes Bush for any reason will most likely have a blind hate for Blair as well. I was playing the odds.

I don't care enough to debate points like this with people anymore. I was attempting to point out the whole "Blair humps Bush's leg!" view is misguided.

It was meant to be sarcastic/ironical. Sorry for the confusion. And he was born there too, last I knew.

Don't take it so hard. It's just the same immature attitude people had in grade school about their teachers and the principal with a more grown up face. Bush could wipe out poverty and world hunger and people would make fun of him for stumbling through speeches on occasion.
