The Washington Post‘s ostensibly liberal columnist Richard Cohen set off a ruckus on Monday with his latest column, in which he said that the family of New York City’s mayor-elect Bill de Blasio is unconventional enough to be physically revolting to average Americans.

While I'm inclined to go along with Jack Shafer, who said, "Richard Cohen just wrote his retirement notice", if the GOP has anything to say, it had better be nothing. Otherwise they risk a worsening of their own chronic foot-in-mouth disease.

The Republicans have been going on that same path for the past 15-odd years now. It's kinda now become standard for them (save for a few rare occasions of honesty)......

I dont see how its the place for either party to say anything about it. Its between him and his employer (the Post).

I dont know if I (or anyone on WP) would be classified as a 'conventional person' or not.

But if I were a 'conventional person' I would launch a class action suit against Cohen for libel!

Lol!

Cohen denies being a racist, and yet he defends the reasoning of obvious racists for disapproving of the Mayor and his family. Sure, people have the right to be hateful bigots, but Mr. Cohen doesn't have to try to justify or rationalize that bigotry.
As for Cohen taking a shot at his wife for being a lesbian - my wife is bisexual, so I take a certain umbrage at that.

When I read the column, I interpreted the author as criticizing average Americans for being racist, not that he was defending the viewpoint of average Americans. Obviously, the author deserves criticism if he was saying that Americans should be revolted by the NYC mayor's family, but it didn't seem to me like that was what he was saying.

It had seemed to me he was justifying such prejudice, instead of attacking it outright.
