http://www.pcworld.com/article/2064877/ ... -down.html - And another icon from my preteen years on the internet goes away. It's sad to see pieces of my halcyon days (Blockbuster as I mentioned earlier) go by the wayside. It's sad. But it was one helluva run. RIP, Winamp. :(

UPDATE: Changed the subject title slightly; per wikipedia, Winamp was first released on April 21, 1997.

if they quit developing it, then why not give the SC either a GPL 3 or BSD licence for further community development? --it's quite extensible via plugin, and could be the basis for a full fledged 2 track audio editor not unlike WaveLab.

I'm sure if you know where to look, people will preserve it for some time to come.

personally, for me... i use winamp for my audio and video!! ! it's insanely easy to use even my mom could figure it out!

Eh... knowing the internet, a version of Winamp will always exist somewhere. :)

Media Monkey is the best and I've tried them all. In fact my new laptop is Mac and I'm now stuck with iTunes, God help me!

up to now I've always just used either a portable mp3 player or just good "old-fashioned" CDs played on a "good old-fashioned" stereo.

Winamp shutting down, not so much a problem.

Shoutcast getting shut down, on the other hand, IS a big deal. Apparently, Microsoft is in talks to acquire Winamp and Shoutcast, so Shoutcast may yet survive.

It's been a year since I updated this, but Radionomy, a Belgian company, is now the majority owner of Nullsoft, which produces Winamp....... so it is back! :D
