Smoking Pot In Colorado Can Still Get You Fired From A Job

Does it seem to anyone that this is contradictive of the legalization of pot in Colorado?

It does not seem totally unreasonable, alcohol is legal in the UK but I am not allowed to work while drunk or drive my car while drunk.

I think however that extending the sackings to those who are being medically treated with the drug is unreasonable, if a person does a job where they are not safe for weeks after smoking weed then if they have to do it for medical reasons then they should be put on sick leave as they are medcially unfit for work.

For example if a woman who works as a steplejack is pregnant then for much of the time when she has "the little one inside her" she will not be fit to work. She should be offered alternative work (at the same rate of pay) at her place of work or be put on the sick list as she is not fit for work. I think this logic should be extended to a person who smokes weed for a medical condition if no alternative medicine (which is safe and effective) can be found for the treatment.

I can understand not allowing people to smoke on the job....trouble is you can still fail a drug test for marijuana, even if you're not getting high on the job. I find drug testing in general to be flawed unless there is reasonable suspicion someone is smoking on the job...and the buisiness prohibits smoking on the job.

With medicinal marijuana I think it should be treated like any other medication within reason, I am sure there are various jobs where taking certain medications can be a disqualifying factor.

This is stupid. I hope they wise up soon. I am waiting for WA to open up their own pot stores, on a semi-related note.

If you smoke on the job or it's taking over your life, then yes I understand.

Sacking people for off the job, occasional recreational use (in THAT state) is excessive.

The fact that medical cannabis patients are getting fired kinda makes me cringe! And I don't smoke!

This isn't surprising at all. Employers usually view their employees in extreme(black/white) terms, often to the point of where it doesn't make any sense.
