Yikes! It seems that the irony in Antarctica just keeps coming and coming, though it's good that most of the people from the Russian boat are now safe.

The mission of the Akademik Shokalskiy(the ship that was originally being rescued) was studying the effects of climate change in the Antarctic. They were retracing a route some explorer took 100 years ago thru what was then melted ice. For whatever reason, this detail has been skipped over in most articles...

I see. I don't really see the relevance. I think that theory has been pretty much settled. It's still seriously cold down there, and sea ice has been expanding slightly due to higher wind speeds and lower salinity of surface water (the latter largely due to gigatonnes of fresh water runoff from the continent flowing into the Southern Ocean).

The details are another matter.

I don't think a couple of aerosol cans would do much good.
