In October, the Dallas Observer reported that the club had obtained a special permit from the Namibian government, as well as clearance from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service, to host the event. According to the club, auctioning the hunt of an older male rhino beyond the age of breeding was the best possible way to raise funds for the Save the Rhino Trust. The trust has distanced itself from the auction, noting on its home page that it does not have "any decision making power on issues such as hunting rhino in or outside of Namibia and we are not at all part of these decisions.

I don't understand this. We don't need rare rhino meat to survive. He seems to enjoy the hunt. I would rather eat mush that kept me going. (LIke artificial meat.) There is value in other creatures besides our destruction of them.

Many big game animals are considered pests in their home countries, e.g. elephants are a particular menace in some areas because they devastate crops and occasionally kill people. Given the incentives of poaching combined with the local dislike of the animals, and you've got a recipe for mass slaughter. Hunters pay a lot of money to go on these safaris, enough money that it becomes worth the while of the locals to protect the animals as an economic resource, rather than treating them like a pest to be exterminated. Look it up, countries that allow hunting of these animals have had greater success in preserving and increasing their numbers, because hunting makes it in their interest to do so.

I can't think of a situation in which I would want to decorate my study with the decapitated head of an animal.

This pretty much sums it up, in my opinion:

"We feel that it is far better to allow this rhino to be hunted in exchange for a huge donation to the anti-poaching campaign, rather than letting him die of natural causes," Hunting Consortium president Robert Kern told Page Six in an email.

Fair enough, but I just don't get why someone would enjoy killing such a creature. I'm no vegetarian and I would hunt to survive, but I wouldn't take any pleasure in it.

I think he's quite amazing.

Doesn't matter whether or not anyone would enjoy it. It's the money from this "hunt" that's going to the anti-poaching campaign that counts.

What if they are a crappy shot and gut shoot him?Needless suffering.He's probably used to tourists gawking at him,so how sporting will this be?If he's old and sick,why not let a vet put him down humanely,then auction off the head.The buyer can always lie to his friends and say he got it on safari.

For that kinda money he's gonna want to stalk that rhino and put a hole in him with an expensive rifle.

This really isn't' rocket science......

It's a celebration of human predation which I think is a base instinct. I don't get enjoying hunting and killing something. Is it a man thing?

Just because he has an expensive rifle that does not mean he's a good shot.It might be some office city boy who has never shot anything in his or her life.

Of course if he only wounds the rhino it could turn the tables and gore him.Will the rhino get to keep the head?

The guy can't shoot. The rhino will be gut shot. The rhino will sodomize the guy. There will be fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling!
Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes! The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria!
Either way this is where I get off......

As barbaric as bullfights, or ancient Roman circus games that involved needless animal slaughter.
