Ariel Sharon, former Israeli Prime Minister, dead at 85

Quote:
(CNN) -- Ariel Sharon, whose half century as a military and political leader in Israel was marked with victories and controversies, died Saturday after eight years in a coma, Israeli Army Radio reported. Sharon was 85.
Sharon died at Sheba Medical Center in the Tel Aviv suburb of Tel Hashomer.
The Israeli statesman was a national war hero to many Israelis for his leadership, both in uniform or as a civilian, during every Israeli war.
Israelis mourn loss of former leader
Many in the Arab world called Sharon "the Butcher of Beirut" after he oversaw Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon while serving as defense minister.....

Fully dead. He was in a persistent vegetative state for 8 years, but for all practical purposes he ceased to exist as a human person when he entered that state.

We really don't know what happens to the brain in a persistent vegetative state. I wonder if this case is similar to Terri Schaivo here in the US where her brain had essentially liquified and she was being kept alive by machines. When I saw this post, my eyes teared up, I am so grateful he's finally at peace.

He was not a nice man, but sometimes a bad man can accomplish what a nice man can not. Loved or hated, he certainly made his mark in the history of a troubled part of the world.

did he continue having birthdays when in his coma or is his age from the date he went into a coma?

He died at the age of 85. He went into his coma when he was 77.

it would have been amusing if it was reported with the headline "ariel sharon no longer in a coma".

Without appearing to be hurtful or rude, I have the following observation.
His coffin was quite large and I would have thought after 8 years in a vegetative state his body would have reduced in size somewhat.

Maybe they thought he was going to die sooner. Why waste a perfectly good coffin.

This is a huge tragedy for his family. Now the tax we pay won't go to pay them Sharon's monthly salary as a PM. They did what they could to prolong his so-called life, now they'll have to go out and work.
