I am currently very concerned about "sink holes".

I'm not reffering to the plug holes in peoples kitchen sinks but to holes that suddenly open up in the ground & swallow whatever is above it.

I saw a documentary about it yesterday evening.
One person was in bed when their bed fell into one. They were never found.

With all the wet weather we are having (especially in the UK & Europe) sink hole occurences appear to be on the increase (according to the media).

I choose the actor. I observe NT's. I listen to their socializing. I practice it, so in social situations I can just emulate/mimic what is expected.
It isn't natural for me, but it enables me to "fit in".
It is VERY tiring and draining, but at least we can appear like them even though it is an act. Like being on the stage.
They can't see it is emulation, and so we are accepted.

That was the one in Tampa last year, they never found him and all they could do was demolish the house and neighboring ones. They are common in Florida and sometimes swallow entire buildings and on rare occasions entire city blocks.
Last summer a hotel building near Disney disappeared overnight in minutes, and the previous summer one even formed in my neighborhood swallowing the street. Today that one is marked by the rectangular slab of different colored pavement put on the plaster used to fill it.

Weirdness, I only downloaded that documentary yesterday and I've just finished watching it.

99.99% of you need not worry because the geological conditions that create sinkholes are pretty unusual. This is why there are lots of them in Florida and Mexico City but not many in, say, New York or Frankfurt. Unless you live in an area that has lots of limestone and underground aquifers you can probably sleep safely in your bed.

Note: My apartment building is concrete, if that starts creaking during the night I know I'm in trouble.

I am extremely scared of sink holes. I'm so glad I'm not alone with this fear.

 It is limestone here, lots of caves.Once when we had a lot of rain part of the driveway fell in about three feet and lots of water came up and some bubbles. We couldn't get out till the county hauled in several load of fill. There are two really old one within a thirty minuet walk.In some of the really old ones there are cool prehistoric bones.

whats causing all the sinkholes in Florida is the fact Florida sits on limestone. this limestone dissolves over time forming big caverns, when filled with water they are pretty stable but since the fresh ground water is being pumped out at an ever increasing rate it leaves big empty pockets that collapse. this combined with the shallow water table in Florida makes a recipe for sink holes

How many people are killed by sinkholes in the World in an entire centurey?

Probably fewer than are killed by allergeric reactions to bee stings each year, or are killed by drunk drivers every day.

Even in Florida you're more likely to get greased by a drunk driver than by a sinkhole.

That is one state I plan to stay away from.....falling into a deep dark pit seems rather horrifying for some reason. I think colorado is probably fairly safe from such things or at least I hope so because I do like this state.

Karst topography, where limestone is washed away by water, then everything drops, all gone.

As for the drivers in Florida, hit and run kills more than murder, crossing the street in Miami was the last thing many people did.

Your 10x more likely to get killed lightning here than get killed by a sinkhole but where I am is in the northern point of the upside-down "V" that the Lightning capital of North America is formed by, the storms are a result of colliding seabreezes.

In the U.S. sink holes occur because aquifers dry up. It happens a lot down in Florida.

A sinkhole opened up in my town, in the parking lot of a hotel. Several cars fell into it.

In this case it was not natural geological conditions that caused it. Rather, I was due to the collapse of a very old abandoned bit of sewer that no one even knew was there.

Obviously something of a fluke, but if I am in a parking lot and happen to notice a large, cracked depression in the pavement, then I will try to park away from it.
