please tell me why anyone should read, let alone take seriously, anything from a website with a tagline like "Inside Every Liberal Is A Totalitarian Waiting To Get Out." ???

if you truly are 17, i would advise you to work on your critical thinking skills. this website is obviously a seriously biased source for "news", and the content should be weighed with that in mind.

I found a source that does not show any bias...
http://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au/news/crime-court/all-charges-dropped-against-registered-sex-offencer/story-fnjuhoxe-1226838

Does it work? When I try to pull it up, it claims that the page isn't there.

And I would advise you to work on your understanding of irony, seeing as how you just committed a logical fallacy. Biased doesn't necessarily mean wrong, and you shouldn't be lecturing people on their critical thinking skills if you can't look past the political associations of an organization to see if there's any truth in what they're saying.

Actually, I broadly agree with Starvingartist. You do need to weigh the evidence for bias - just as you need to look at the evidence.

What actually happened on the occasion for which this hearing took place?

The defendant attempted to lead a 4-year-old girl away from her father, but was stopped within a few moments.

This is not the same as raping a 4-year-old girl. Could it have got to that point? Maybe. Did it? No. You probably can't prosecute the guy for abduction, because the child never actually left sight or care of her father. Had she done so, it would have been a different matter. There isn't much you can do except stick him on the sex-offenders register, but he's already on that.

The [REDACTED] rag in question then uses this as material to generalise from one paedophile s**t to all Afghans, in order to tout a racist, anti-immigrant message, and link it to another event for which he's already been convicted and punished. This sentence was arguably inadequate, and one might reasonably have argued for a custodial sentence in that case but, given that sex offences are often underpunished, it's probably no more disproportionate than for many other similar crimes, but that is immaterial in terms of trying this particular case.

Without knowing what was actually said in court, we have no idea how much the magistrate emphasised cultural differences over other factors, such as the actual likelihood of a conviction, given what actually happened.

One Afghan engaged in paedophile behaviour, therefore all Afghans are paedophiles? Not logical. This Afghan paedophile was not fully tried for an incident that led nowhere and was stopped very quickly, therefore Afghans have a licence to rape children? Also a logical leap.

Are parts of Afghanistan desperately poor and stuck in mediaeval social conditions, especially as regards women and children? Do parts of the country have big problems with (typically male on male) paedophilia? Are girls often married off at a very young age? Yes, but let's not overgeneralise.

I conclude that one needs to take this report with an entire pot of salt.

But you actually bothered to read it, right? Rather than dismissing it entirely based on nothing but the source?

Yes, but it contained the level of bovine manure I've come to expect from the right-wing blogosphere. It did nothing but confirm my dim view of the field - poorly substantiated non-evidence of the type they use to lie or mislead about climate change, gun control, foreigners, the sick, disabled or unemployed, or whoever else they've decided to drivel on about this week. Were it not for a lesson in critical thinking for a teenager, I wouldn't have bothered.

That's the price of being intellectually honest though, actually seeking out people you disagree with and seeing what they have to say and if there's any value in it, rather than simply hand waving it all away. I think it's very important to understand where people you disagree with are coming from, so even if you think they're wrong, you can at least engage them in good faith.

Odd that I can't find a reputable paper that has anything to say about this.

Life is too short for this level of engagement with every crackpot and bs artist.

You really don't need to give young earth creationists or flat earth believers or racists the time of day.

While I agree that the notion of giving the offender a get-out-of-jail-free-card just because he didn't understand cultural differences is patently bullsh*t, and that this guy should have been prosecuted for attempted kidnapping, I don't believe for a second that all Afghan immigrants can be lumped with this idiot. It's clear that the agenda of this article is plainly racist and anti-immigrant.

Just finally seen the comment where it clumps all the Muslims together. Not something I would have said. From now on, I'll check carefully for any bias. (Though, I did find that OTHER website with the story. I guess the link does not work? Another enigma...)

What level of engagement? Listening to what they have to say before dismissing them out of hand? Strange beliefs and intelligence are not mutually exclusive, despite what a lot of people seem to think.

i didn't dismiss them out of hand, i dismissed them because they openly trumpeted their bias in the site's banner, which shows up at the top of every page. and it wasn't even just bias, it was flat-out offensive and intentionally inflammatory. how much farther do i need to read before i've given them a "fair shake"?
