http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nati ... n/5776421/ - The iconic "Got Milk" slogan, in use since 1993, is no more. It will be replaced by a new slogan, "Milk Life", which, IMO, will take some getting used to.

There goes one of the greatest slogans of our time......

I always hated that ad campaign. Couldn't stand to look at the people with milk on their faces.

Sad to see those go -- that was an era! I loved the "Aaron Burr!! !" commercial.

Those commercials were the best milk commercials ever to be on TV.

Why was there a need to advertise milk?

To make money. They over-hype its nutritional value in order to get people to buy more and make more money for the dairy industry. Then they teach in American Schools that it is one of the 4 food groups. Then when you watch the commercials you are supposed to feel like it is a PSA instead of a commercial. That makes the whole advertising campaign even more effective.

I'm not necessarily anti-milk. But I do believe what I described is accurate. If we need milk, we don't need it as bad as they want us to think we do. It's all about the money.

I don't drink milk; I hate it. But my bones are strong and healthy neverthless. I do eat cheese and yogurt. I can't say whether dairy has helped me. Maybe it has.

I never could stand the taste of milk unless it's chocolate milk.
Anyhow, I think they should have just left it "got milk" since that's what we're used to. "Milk life" is stupid.

Over 40 years ago, when I was in France, they had a TV commercial advertising peas. I guess the motivation was similar.

In that same early Nineties era the USA also had those ads showing cowbows at the chuckwagon around the campfire narrated by Robert Mitchum saying:

"Beef. Its what's for dinner."

Used to wonder the same thing: why do they need to sell us on this?. But I think its because of the health consciousness of the Seventies and Eighties. It all cut into the sales of regular iconic American foods like red meat and milk. So the diary and beef industries had to actually come out on TV, and resell Americans on stuff that they used to eat automatically by habit.

My favorite moment with this ad was when Monica Lewinsky did her famous "Got milk?".

It was referenced by other media campains: ranging from Evangelical Christian bumper stickers saying "Got Jesus?" to porno films entitled "Got Milf?".

So I guess it kinda is the 'end of an era'.
