Senate Republicans have blocked a bill that would have expanded healthcare and supportive services to veterans, improved the availability and affordability of higher education for veterans, implemented a process for tracking and reducing the backlog of veteran claims, provide job training for veterans, improve benefits for war widows, provide expanded treatment for dental, allow more veterans to be eligible for treatment at VA medical centers, and provide long term treatment for sexual assault trauma.

The same group of people dead set against reducing the size of our military in any way shape or form.

All because they won't vote for the bill unless Iran sanctions are attached to it.

Which is why I found this confusing (at first) and very disheartening. I don't understand what is going through their heads. They have just alienated a huge chunk of their usually otherwise loyal voting base.

I think it has just gotten to the point where the Republican party will do anything just to screw over their opposition, regarless of the consequences for the American people and the future of their party. And thus continues the slow downward death spiral of the current Republican party. They better hope the Dems really screw the pooch between now and mid-terms (and given their track record, it seems likely).

But all of the U.S. managed to get money together to send foreign aid to Ukraine.....veterans are not as important as people who most Americans generally don't care about.

Republicans exploit veterans to advance their own agenda. With a non Caucasian President in office, Republicans especially like to exploit the oldest veterans they can, knowing (and exploiting) that older Americans are more likely to have a non favourable view of the non Caucasian President. Its easier to propagate the distortion of saying he is a "Muslim" too. And extend the nonsense about his "birth certificate." Lets not forget its easier to call him and his wife ape people too.

BTW Republican extremist groups (aka Tea Party) love to organize meetings/campaign rallies in senior citizen centers, again knowing they can push the racial innuendo more effectively.

What Republicans like to do is exploit veterans groups, especially now, with a non white President, the Republicans like to specifically target older veterans who are much more likely to have a non favourable view of nonwhites.

And unfortunately, the older veterans tend to worship the very dirt the Republicans treat them like.

I find it particularly amusing how Republicans endorse the privatization of social security, Medicare and VA health care yet still stand with their arms around a 90yo war veteran as if they actually care about them, when in reality they are trying to kill them off rather than spend any of their precious war money to actually help people instead of to kill people.

It's just a Republican act. Republicans only care about the richest 1 percent of the American population, while at the same time, appealing to their closed-minded voter base.

Of course they do. Veterans, poor people, gays, minorities, women, etc. be damned.

Also Republicans, along with the majority of their Democrat counterparts, are just shallow, whiny pricks who take pride in their own arrogance.
