What if she had come storming into the school with a gun, furious that someone had upset or mistreated her child? Should she have just been allowed to waltz on down the hall without a challenge of any sort? Isn't that the sort of thing the media leads us to expect these days? The Principal had to assume a worst case scenario - if she hesitated, it might have cost lives.

If that principal had done nothing, people would be sung her for endangering their children by not following protocol. Rules are in place for a reason. In this case, the school has to cover it's @$$ legally, for any and every eventuality.

In most cases, if a child is causing a disturbance in the classroom - especially one that requires notification of a parent - that child is removed from the class and taken to the office. Her child was more likely to be in the Nurses' office than in his classroom anyway.

The mom may feel it was an overreaction, but that's only in hindsight. She wasn't thinking about the rest of the students in that building, or the people tasked with their safety. She didn't follow protocol and the school staff reacted appropriately.

Normally I would agree with much you say however the school called the MOTHER requesting assistance. She was also recognized and "buzzed in" and went unimpeded into the school. If anything, whoever is responsible for letting people in should have been taken to task. Say this had been a shooter, they just walked by with no one questioning them or stopping them. By the time the principle acted it would have already been too late. Plus put yourself in that position. Your child is in trouble and school asks for help, would not your first impulse be to take care of the child first? Plus it mentions she had just visited the school the day before and had met with the principle. She was KNOWN and let in. Personally I think this is a case of discrimination. How much would you wager had she been white this wouldn't have gone down the same way?

Arresting anyone for visiting a school is an over-reaction, unless they're committing a crime at the time, or obviously up to no good.

The correct reaction, if they didn't want her on the premises, ( despite having invited her there in the first place) would be to politely ask her to leave, and accompany her to the school gates. If she refused to leave after repeated requests, then maybe you might call the police.

Arresting her because in an imaginary alternate universe she might run around shooting people is like beating a child because you dreamed about them being naughty last night.

edit: is there an offence of "wrongful arrest" in the US? in the UK this would clearly be considered wrongful and she would have a valid claim against the police for compensation.

edit2: ah.. it seems that in the US, the offence is "false arrest" and police have qualified immunity to protect themselves.

@Pete42

Have to remember the US is fast becoming a police state. No knock warrants, battering rams, flash-bang grenades, swat teams just for minor offenses. We are no longer a free country. :(

What if she'd hijacked an airliner and kamikaze'd it into the school?
Should the schools all be ringed with AA missile batteries just to cover their asses? Really, to assume a mother responding to a request to come to the school is automatically going to roll in hot slinging lead is over the top. You can what if any scenario to death.

This woman was basically punished just for being a good mother.
And seriously, couldn't the police officers called to the scene used some discretion and not arrest her when they saw what the situation was all about?

No, it's a CYA (Cover Your Ass) culture and they'd rather thoughtlessly f**k someone over than risk making a decision that can't be bureaucratically justified. I'd be at least reluctant to call the cops for anything and I generally try to avoid them.

Very wise personal policy avoiding cops.

Curious coincidence, my school informed me this morning that I am no longer allowed to attend school excursions with my daughter without an i) a police clearance and ii) working with children certification...the timing is strange because I have spent the last three years attending excursions and often volunteering to help the kids.

I guess a a memo was sent out?

What makes a police state socialist? The Scandinavian countries are pretty socialistic, and are just the exact opposite of totalitarian.

When we had some maintenance or building works in schools, afterward everything is ready, I am as well called to do my measurements and to create the final plans, the school owner finally receives.

Still that does not keep me, from having myself to check in and say "Hello!" at the secretary. Thats an public rule, and one that every parent should be happy about. When my kids go to school, I want as well no strangers going around the building, without anyone asking them about their permittance to do so.

There are normally signs at every school entrance that tell you that it is forbidden to enter, until you got permittance by the school office/secretary. So when you enter a building in an area, that you are clearly fobidden to enter, you are an unauthorized intruder, and thats a crime.

I really dont want to make an issue about it, and do not think bad of that woman in the meaning of her having bad purposes. She simply was concerned about her kid, did not think, and in my oppinion, simply should have been told about the propper rules for it. But even when there are no general school shootings in my area, and we have far less troubles about weapons and shootings here, it is highly uncommon to simply storm into an school and directly go into an class, without checking in at the secretary. ITs less about shooting, but more about strangers molesting kids and hiding in the sanitary rooms, or divorced parents kidnapping kids and trying to bring them across borders. (Which normally takes only a few hours in europe.)

I really dont think, the mother did something bad, but I think its really not ok to simply enter a school without check-in. Bad yop, arresting her for that stuff is defenitly weird. Inform her, make her realize that this rules exist to protect her kid as well, and thats it.

Why is it that everytime something like this happens, people have to make it about race? Race has absolutely nothing to do with it!
