Quayside in Whitby is officially Britain's best fish'n'chip shop – but it had to fight off strong competition from a new wave of top-quality chippies.

http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle ... chip-shops

I didn't realise that McDonalds had their own fish and chip shop. I reckon the prices are a bit steep though, and I bet you don't get a proper portion.

I remember when you could get a portion of chips for 30p, and you got a good portion too.

You could dine out on it for a week.

I think I might have misunderstood about the McDonalds part.

I'm an American and I'm weird:

but I like the fish-and-chips served in southwest London, by the take-away shops which sell Schwarma as well.

At McDonald's in the UK, your French-fry portion really sucks; in a take-away shop, they give you triple portions of chips, each chip containing a substantial amount of potatoes.

If you're a Northerner and you go to London Town, you might have trouble finding a chippy that'll do you chips 'N' gravy, so here's a little link to help you.

http://www.liquidice.co.uk/food/chipsngravy.html

Chips 'N' Gravy is one of the major things that causes the North/South divide.

I couldn't even get a steak and kidney pudding when I went to Wales. They looked at me as if I was talking a foreign language.

When I moved south I went into a baker's shop and asked for some cobs. They didn't have a clue what I was asking for. I'd assumed the entire planet knew cobs were small rounds of bread. Turns out southerners called them something else, might have been baps or rolls. Forgotten now.

Technically speaking, English IS a foreign language in Wales.

Fish and chips, food of the Gods!!

There are hundreds of decent chippies in Northern England but I also found a very good one in Edinburgh on the Royal Mile. Also, barm cakes are called bread cakes in Yorkshire but they still taste the same.

Chips are best friends with mayonnaise.

My local chip shops are really stingy and mean. Only my local ones though. Most places are generous.

I like to have them with err, a jumbo sausage.

When I was in the UK there were some fish & chips vans that would make their rounds, in addition to the regular shops. One thing I wish we had in more abundance in the US are places (or vans) that specialize in fish-n-chips. :D

In Scotland we're more refined with our Chip Shop etiquette. :D

Fish and Chips is far too generic a term to be used and you could end up being served Hake/Pollock/Vietnamese farmed rubbish and chips.

We usually have Haddock as our standard whereas in England I think you have Cod 'n' Chips. My local also does Smoked Yellow Haddock, Skate, Rock Salmon, Salmon, Scampi, Turbot, Lemon/Dover Sole and a few others.
