Girl killed by boy whose prom invite she turned down
I'm surprised that this hasn't been posted here yet. Maren Sanchez, 16, a junior at a high school in the US state of Connecticut, kept turning down a boy she hated, but who was obsessed with her, for junior prom. Maren already had a bf. Finally the boy confronted her the morning before the dance. She still said no, so he slashed her throat. She died within 30 minutes. On one news site comment board I read, somebody said that when she turned him down, he grabbed her by the neck and threw her down a flight of stairs, then leapt on her and slashed her neck, face, and breasts. From Maren's hometown newspaper, the New Haven Register:

Seriously, what is wrong with America? Crime was greater when I was a kid (80s-90s), true, but we didn't have all these random killings, or youth who couldn't handle being told no (one kid tried to kill his debate teacher when he was booted from the school debate team), nor all this over the top materialism, with kids spending four figure sums on prom. Kids record every minute on their smartphones, then pass the photos and videos around school. Some kids have killed themselves due to being unable to escape bullying. Seriously, stuff like this makes me even more determined to be a hermit in the woods one day. I just hope Putin doesn't decide to start WW3 first.
- It wasn't reported as a case of bullying
- The victim wasn't on the spectrum
- The victim wasn't gay
- The perpetrator wasn't a tea bagger
- A knife was used, not a gun
In short it wasn't juicy enough to make anyone rush to post it or even to care much either way......

Maybe a lot of people are not aware of this incident until now. I am surprised the murderer has not been assigned a mental illness label.. I guess that is reserved for mass killings, but I think if he was driven to this level of rage there are some extreme obsessive tendencies raging inside that brain of his. I can relate to that level of obsession and what it can drive someone to do. It is very familiar to me. I'm sorry for what that girl suffered through. I can imagine the mental part of what he put her through was pretty terrifying by itself, let alone the physical culmination of his frustration. Another reason people should not so easily dismiss the warning signs that led up to this.
It's been all over the news. But it's been all over the news because she was a good-looking 16-year-old honors student, thus titillating. Jilted would-be lovers/exes attack women all the time, and sometimes kill them. Google "shot his wife" or some variant and see what a cornucopia of domestic violence comes up.
(And then guys wonder why we don't trust men so much.)

I don't watch the news. I just see what flashes in front of me briefly while I am scanning tv channels and what floats past me in FB.. I don't read newspapers.
Unless they are attractive, powerful and/or wealthy. In addition I've lost count of the number of young girls who throw common sense out of the window to hang around with "bad boys" who often beat the crap out of them.

i am a woman and these factors have absolutely nothing to do with whether i trust a person or not when i meet them. the second part i'm not even going to address directly because....ugh.
edit* i hope cyberdad that you're not a dad to little girls.....or boys, for that matter.

Why would someone feel the need to "google" things like this? If you are aware that this already goes on at whatever level, why would you search for more? If I want confirmation fo the statistics of violence or death I can think of more informative sites to search for results.

I was responding to a generalisation about men relating to why women don't trust us. I was pointing out that (at least here in Australia) girls tend to throw common sense out of the window in the late teens early 20s when they choose to hang around with men who are misogynist, and do dangerous and reckless things. Trust in this context goes straight out the window. There is actually a biological basis for this.
It's now also revealed at places like Harvard fraternities college girls allow themselves to be abused to hang out with cool frat guys. 99% of the abuse never gets reported. No need (apparently) for trust there either.
If however you are a male and look poorly dressed and not so good looking or wealthy then the burden is on these men to "earn" the trust of these girls/women. It's not really rocket science.

did you ever think that in the beginning of such relationships these guys might be disingenuous with these girls, flatter and pamper them (it's called "grooming"), and then when they get them alone suddenly the monster comes out to play--by then it's too late and the girl is afraid for her safety with him and afraid for her safety if she tries to break up with him. but yeah, we should totally put the blame for that on the girls, not the a**hole douchebags who lie to the girls and beat them.
The killer has the sex starved omega dweeb thing down.
Actually I prefer science to speculation

As I said, trust is largely a prerquisite for nice decent men who have to bend over backwards to prove they are reliable, I've seen so many examples of girls in highschool, university and in my extended family and friends making the same mistake choosing "douchebags" on the basis they have a motorbike or they are good looking or some other vacuous thing that I've lost count.
In this instance science nicely explains it.
Funny, when I google "killed her husband" I get lot's of results for that as well. In fact, my 5th google result was a news story about a woman who beat her husband to death with a hammer. So, only men are responsible for domestic violence eh? Just a tip, google results do not give any indication whatsoever about true statistics. Yes, I'm aware that the true statistics do show that women are the majority of victims of domestic violence by men but that does not mean that only men are violent (my google results show that women can be too) nor does mean that the majority of men are violent (I suspect that most men are not violent).

how large and how varied was the sample of women in this study? how did they define variables like "sexy" vs "reliable" men in the dating profiles? how did the actors portray those traits? does the fact that the women considered the dating profiles of particular "sexy cad" men mean those women were more likely to actively seek relationships with "sexy cad" men? were any of the results repeated in other studies, and if so, where are those studies? (i'm looking in the archives of The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (from where the articles claims to have drawn the report) and i'm not seeing this study--is this article/study even legit?)
and guys never never choose their female companions poorly based on things like physical attractiveness? i'm sure i would have to look really hard to find any REAL scientific evidence to back that up, too.
another man in the world, and a father no less, who thinks women's behaviour is dictated by their ovaries. wonderful.
i feel sorry for your daughter you already think so little of her.
Google Kristina Durante (yes she's a woman) Have a read of some of interesting peer reviewed scientific articles she's written

Most enlightening
Most men actually choose women approximately similar in appearance to themselves as a mate. Once again this is scientific.
Utter rubbish. I may have views of how young girls behave based on my observation and on scientific evidence but that does not mean I would use this to dictate how I would think about or treat my daughter.

I am interested in seeing the peer reviewed scientific studies saying that most men actually choose women similar in appearance to them as a mate.
