A very difficult situation. And it doesn't help that the Nigerian government, like so many governments, has entrenched corruption where many government officials skim money off the top where they, being somewhat charitable, try and do a fair to middling job at the same time.

And cast my vote for following the tradition rules of military engagement and especially the civilian-combatant distinction. The Nigerian military has perhaps already tried the 'tough' methods against this insurgency, perhaps a lot like my own United States tried in Vietnam.

If the government remains the visible good guys, they can win over maybe 70% civilians in insurgency areas. And that makes a difference. And then you can perhaps get the leads to find these kidnapped young persons.

I would say that these Islamic savages want flushing down the toilet in tiny pieces, but there aren't enough toilets and I wouldn't wish them on the toilets. Every last one of these diseases needs to meet Allah in a very painful and bizarre fashion.

Same with Al-Shabab. Evil, evil bastards that want wiping off the face of the Earth.

الله هو غزر

But if we focus on end game and revenge, were not playing a steady eddie game and giving ourselves a reasonable chance to get these teenage girls back.

Plus, I refuse to hate all persons of the muslim religion, especially since right-wing, 'conservative' talk radio tells me that I should.

Islam comes in all shapes and sizes. People from the Middle East were at the vanguard of progress during the medieval period.

Sometimes, "Jihad" is interpreted quite loosely (and too literally).

I read somewhere that the fact that the kidnappers were speaking about selling the girls into slavery, rather than killing them, is a "positive sign" that they want negotiations.

However, this same organization is massacring people in villages near the Cameroonian border (very problematic, to say the least).

If we buckle down and post a lot of pictures of ourselves holding signs and pouting, I'm certain the girls will be released.

Unfortunetly the best opportunity to get them back safely has alread past. Now the outlook is bleak at best.

You need to know where they are, who and what is guarding them. What booby traps can be tripped while trying a rescue. How many protectors there are, what armourment, and how well dug in are they.

Then there is the problem of the girls being kept seperated and mobile.

My heart dreads what those Islamic's are likely doing to them. I've read some horrific stories out of afghanistan. God help them, because we likely can't.

all countries shoud be helping nigeria out on this, after all if those girls ended up being forced into international prostition they will be shipped into other countries living and breathing on their land like the native residents but experiencing no freedom and hell every day;countries dont need to endorse that by turning away and pretending not to know about whats going on,as they coud be host to it soon enough.
it took a while for this story to become known on western media.

Boko Haram took them and they've recently also massacred around 300 people... :? These girls are extremely ''lucky'' if they get home but they'll be traumatised and raped and I doubt that there're many affordable resources in Nigeria to help them deal with it.

So many victims of islam, it's so, so sad. :( All this death, destruction and despair and for what? Nothing!

Islam is a pestilence on the face of the planet.

Tons of people are talking about Bring Our Girls Back, like Boko Haram is just going to release them like that. It's a nice gesture and all but that's all it really is, and unless the Nigerian government or American Special Forces go in and shoot them down, it's not gonna happen.

I can't stop thinking that there is a lot of background to this story that has not been aired.

I don't watch TV much, so I've seen no pictures of the lifestyle of northern Nigerians, but I get the impression that the population lives in a world which most westerners would not recognise.

The girls were abducted from a boarding school. In the west, boarding schools are routinely associated with wealth and privilege, but in Chibok I suspect that there are different parameters in play - there is even some doubt about the precise number of children who were abducted - can you imagine a school in the western world keeping such poor records?

The logistics of such a large kidnapping in such a remote place are not simple. It must have been well-planned and well-resourced. It possibly also needed a degree of co-operation from those in charge. 'Boko Haram' apparently means something like 'Western Education is Evil'.

There is a lot of stuff on western forums (like this one, for example) about the evils of the western way of life, but the bottom line is that we still feel justified in judging the behaviour of others according to our own standards. And, when we judge it to be necessary, we still feel justified in imposing our own standards upon other parts of the world.

If and when we land on Mars, whose little green men and women have lived for billions of years without interference, then will we still feel justified in taking over their world just because we can?

keeping females ignorant and pregnant surely cannot be a good thing, no matter whose culture you're talking about.

It will become a good thing when the human race faces extinction!

Please don't get me wrong - in the west, we have choices which are not universally available. Culture is a western concept - many human societies are still concerned with survival, but the weapons they use come from the cultured west.
