lots of blind people have plenty of companionship other than a dog. what this cane has in common with a guide dog is that it extends "vision" beyond the tip of the cane; gives an indication of what is 2 or 3 steps ahead, rather than just one.
BTW - i had a blind friend in college, amazing guy. he knew campus so well that he would carry his cane just so others would realize he was blind - he did not actually use it. he was also majoring in math/science secondary education, with a 4.0 gpa, and was in the ohio state university marching band.
