http://news.yahoo.com/school-sorry-maki ... 44579.html - This just makes my blood boil. Enough said. Special ed students deserve more better treatment than this. UGH.

Somehow I'm not convinced they're actually 'sorry'.

The only problem I see here is if the students were digging through dumpsters. That would be gross.
But trash/recyclable sorting is a life skill. My family does it home. I'm sure lots of families do.
I think that sorting through lunchroom and classroom trash cans/bins is perfectly fine as part of a life skills curriculum. Just make sure the kids wash their hands after. You can even have them wear gloves to do it.

And it would be nice if they got the regular education students working alongside the special ed students. Mainstream kids should learn those kind of life skills, too.

That last thing you said: +1. Everyone deserves an equal chance to work.

Sorting through trash - - shows you what sort of lives the school thinks are ahead for these kids.

When I was in school, the kids in detention had to pick up trash in the parking lot.
Then it was suggested that the National Honor Society students should do the same, as a service project.
The NHS students' parents were outraged, and caused such an uproar that the suggestion was withdrawn.

I think special education children would enjoy sorting trash, depending on the instructions and supervision attitude. I used to love things like that when I was a kid.
