They are worried to be associated with "the homosexual agenda", but apparantly they aren't worried to be associated with bigotry and ignorance.
If some of the people with only a basic level of English are confused about the word, a school would be a good place to explain it to them. There are probably people who think that Homo erectus means a gay person with an erection. That doesn't mean that we can use the word for what it actually means.

Don't be too sure about that. This is an -American- public school. Our public schools turn out a population that is 40 percent functionally illiterate.

Our public schools are 20 th in the world in Science, Math, Technology and Critical thinking. This is what our tax dollar buys.
