It is harrowing that anti-gay violence can be done so openly and with impunity in Russia.

It's funny, because I was in Russia in September 2013, and I was force to go out in some upscale clubs and bars in Moscow and I saw gay people (men and women) and they weren't even hiding and nobody was bothered with it.
But from what I heard it's mostly in the working classes where people have problems with gays, and the gay hunting is done by Russian nationalists from and in the suburbs of Moscow, the center of the city (that can be compared to upper Manhattan) is more open and tolerant.

My wife and I watched that episode. Very sobering how those savages weren't even concerned that the documentary maker had been filming them while abusing and humiliating Russian gays. Worse, how the law there punished the victims, rather than the perpetrators.
