En banc panel narrowly overturns SRS ruling for Kosilek
An en banc hearing by the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals has overturned 3-2 a federal district court's order that sex reassignment surgery be carried out on Michelle Kosilek, a Massachusetts prisoner serving a life sentence for murder:

Analysis:
1.) This ruling will not permanently bar this surgery for all prisoners because it was based on facts specific to the case, namely that not all medical professionals were in agreement regarding the appropriateness of surgery and that as a wife-killer Kosilek would likely not be a good person to put in a women's prison.
2.) Kosilek has just lost for good. SCOTUS will deny her certiorari and the Mass. DOC will be careful to use only doctors that would not prescribe sex reassignment surgery.
