Donna Douglas, best known from her role as Elly Mae Clammpet on the Beverly Hillbillies has died at age 81. She had also appeared in one of the most famous Twilight Zone episodes, Eye Of The Beholder, as the lead character after her bandages have been removed. She will always be remembered as one hot babe, and will be sorely missed.

I grew up watching the reruns. I don't know if it's true about her having a crush on Elvis, but she had in fact been one of his dancers in - I think - one of his B movies.
By the way, I love your new avatar! :thumright:

I have to admit I didn't even know she was in that 'Twilight Zone' episode. I have to admit that I didn't really know much of anything she did outside of 'Beverly Hillbillies', but it looks like her time in show business was brief. She still seemed to have a long, happy and productive life, so at least it wasn't a tragedy.

I was about to lament how 'The Beverly Hillbillies' became the next major pop culture landmark to lose all of its surviving cast, but I was surprised to learn that Max Baer, Jr. is still alive (and he was apparently younger than Douglas).

I wonder why they dubbed her voice in "eye of the beholder"?

I always thought it had been because the actress beneath the bandages had a deep, intelligent voice, but apparently was not considered for her movie starlet looks, while Donna Douglass had movie star looks, but apparently Serling and the rest didn't think she had the commanding voice.

I guess that's one of my weird deals, in that it always bothered me that they [Hollywood types] would use the actor or actress but not their voice- the way I see it, it oughta be a package deal, use the whole thing or hire somebody else. IOW, it's fakery. IMHO a proper voice coach could have gotten the required vocal timbres out of ms. douglass. the whole thing shows a lack of imagination on the part of Hollywood producers.

Reminds me of poor David Prowse sweating and boiling in that Darth Vader suit, then George Lucas didn't even tell him that James Earl Jones was doing the actual voice, or how the mask finally came off - - and it was someone totally different from Prowse!

I can think of a couple of examples, all of which had decent reasoning behind them:
Arnold Schwarzenegger in 'Hercules in New York', simply because of his thick accent.
Vincent D'Onofrio as Orson Welles in 'Ed Wood', dubbed by voice actor Maurice LaMarche, as D'Onofrio looked like Welles but doesn't sound like him.
Klinton Spilsbury as the title character in 'The Legend of the Lone Ranger', because while he looked the part, he was an awful actor (in his only film role) and was dubbed in an attempt to salvage the film (it didn't work).

Pretty much every time it's somebody who's hired for their looks but has a disagreeable voice (heavy accent, bad line readings, audio issues, etc.). It doesn't bother me too much; some of the time these things aren't noticeable on set but then are emphasized when recorded on audio/video and it's too late to re-shoot.

Honestly, if there's anything that bothers me more, it's body doubles. It's one thing when an actor has an accent that doesn't turn out well in post-production, but if you're an actor who won't do nudity, don't sign onto a film where you have nude scenes. I forget what movie it was, but a couple of years ago there was an actress who did a film where she had a topless scene and they had to CGI her nipples. Seriously, what is the point?!

I'm sure Donna Douglas, the devout Christian that she was, is thrilled that this thread about her has devolved into this discussion. Putting things back on track now.

am pretty sure that where the former ms. douglass is now, she is concerned mainly with higher-order things than our little discussion.
