He was more of a stereotypical college professor type then the stereotypical politician, a person who seemed more comfortable intellectualizing with books then hob knobbing, a person who ruminated a lot and who stuck to his positions even when they were unpopular. He was a liberal in the old fashioned sense not a "progressive" in the current sense.

I can still remember when many people thought he had a chance at taking the White House. He was that capable and inspirational of a leader.
