Depressing, shocking, but not really surprising.

The common roots of both the Islamic civilization, and of Western Civilization, are in the 5000 year old pagan civilizations of Mesopotamia (now called Iraq). And now the material evidence of the common heritage is being destroyed.

The Taliban did much the same thing by blowing up the famous 1000 foot long reclining Buddha statues in Afganistan.
The Koran says "what happened in darkness shall remain in darkness". So Islamist extremists interpret that literally to mean that all relics of the pre Islamic world have to be destroyed.

And even without that as a creed the fierce civil war in Syria has also wiped out many historic sites. Both the oldest Church in the World, and the oldest mosque in the World, happened to have been in Syria. Both were destroyed (by happenstance, not by design) in the current war.

Religious fanatics have always taken it upon themselves to destroy a past before their religion, no matter the cultural loss. Think only of how the Taliban had destroyed sculptures left by Buddhism.
Lest anyone accuse me of picking on Islam on this matter, I'll be the first to point out how Christians ages ago had done the same. One particular case in point, after Charlemagne had collected the Pre-Christian songs and stories of his people, the Rhineland Franks, his grandson had it all burned.

So let me get it straight, these idiots...destroyed all these artifacts for being of the devil and pre-dating Islam and thus being some form of blasphemy when their organization is named after an Egyptian goddess.... But to expect intelligence from religious extremists or other extremists is expecting too much. Much like the Nazi's trying to create the blonde haired blue eyed master race and stealing the Swastika from other non-white cultures and using it as their symbol.

Surprised these artifacts lasted this long in an ISIS held city, maybe this is a sign that their position is threatened? Wishful thinking maybe but I remember hearing that the Kurds have been making a push. Iraq is a country of so many antiquities and it seems a lot of them will be lost forever before it is said and over with. ISIS kidnapped up like 250+ Assyrian Christians as well, this is ethnic cleansing and I don't see end to this conflict in sight.

The Nazis had virtually thrown away Germany's artistic legacy by deeming anything modern like surrealism, Dada, etc as "degenerate art," allegedly created by Jews (in fact, most of the artists were Christians), which they had sold off internationally and pocketed the money. Many of the artists had either fled Germany (such as George Grozs, who became an American), or had ended up in concentration camps. Much of this doubtlessly had been due to Hitler's own rage over his failure as an artist, when the art world had rejected his own art work of post card quality for modernist trends. No, the Nazis preferred their paintings and sculptures to have been of muscular naked men with swords (nope, nothing homo erotic about that :P ).

It is ironic that the acronym of their name is the name of a Pagan goddess.
If ISIS were to reach Egypt ISIS would lay waste to all images of Isis (probably destroy the Sphinx, and the Pyramids too).
But the "Islamic Republic of Iraq, and Syria" is not actually intentionally "named after" the Pagan Egyptian goddess. Thats just an accident of the acronym. Kinda like the official website of the Phillipines "Moro Islamic Liberation Front" sharing the the same Google page with hundreds of sites for "milf" porn.

At this point, I'm fairly certain that nobody anywhere in the nation, or indeed the world, who has a pulse would object to the notion that ISIS members and supporters, to the fullest extent possible, need to be wiped off the face of the earth (except of course for ISIS supporters themselves of course).

Well I know that...but its still ironic, and I take solace in the fact they probably hate when that gets pointed out.

Most of the destroyed statues were replicas, and the originals are in Baghdad, according to experts.

Well, I suppose that's a plus. Just as long as those lunatics don't get anywhere near Baghdad.

If all historical muslim nations believed in that interpretation, no artifact in the region would have remained in - Egypt was under caliphate rule several times, there's no doubt that Daesh' (ISIL) wishful caliphate would be the worst one in history.
(and the Muslim brotherhood did call for destroying the pyramids, thanks goodness for Al-Sisi's coup d'état).
