It really is.

I wonder if someone tried to assassinate him in retaliation for Nemtsov.

i'm curious about the Times' use of "but" in the article title. it seems to me that "and" would be just as good, if not a more fitting choice.

to me, "but" implies that he is found and his condition is known, but the rumors persist.

"Putin has Vanished, but Rumors are Popping up Everywhere."

Now that you mention it, it is an odd headline. It states that he has vanished, but he only has from public. And "but" isn't right at all...

the plot thickens...

He probably retreated to the Kremlin.

Very Soviet!

There used to be a "science" called "Kremlinology"--where the analyzed the Soviet figureheads.

Actually from what I have read his girlfriend is close to giving birth. So that might explain his absence.

For me it makes a bit of sense. It could be understood as: Putin has vanished but there are some clues about what might have happen to him.

That's true.

Washington Post

Quote:
You can see why some in Russia are panicking right now—or veiling their discomfort in humor. It certainly doesn’t help that Putin’s disappearance comes at a particularly nervous time for the country. It is at war in Ukraine, its economy is shuddering under sanctions and historically low oil prices, and the opposition leader, Boris Nemtsov, was recently gunned down steps from the Kremlin. There is a sense in Moscow that the wheels are coming off. To Moscow’s chattering class, Putin’s disappearance confirms that impression.

BBC

Quote:
If he makes an appearance with his Kyrgyz counterpart, Almazbek Atambayev, in front of plenty of journalists and television cameras, it would at least quash the rumours that he is either dead or seriously ill, especially if the broadcast is live.

But if not the rumour mill is likely to crank up into an even higher gear.
