BP settles with the U.S. & Gulf States over 2010 "Oil Spill"

Today BP reached an agreement of $18.7 Billion with U.S. government and the gulf states over the 2010 "oil spill".

This brings the total amount of damages to $53.8 Billion, the highest amount in U.S. history.

$4.9B of the $18.7B goes to the Gulf States governments the rest goes to the federal government for violations of the Clean Water Act to pay for the clean up of the Gulf.
This money will be paid out over 18 years.

The rest of the money is going to the effected municipalities, citizens, and businesses (they gave up their right to sue for the trust fund).

How do you feel about this?
Is BP being unfairly punished because they are British?
Was there really an "oil spill" and "environmental disaster" in 2010?
Or did Obama make this all up to divert attention away from his agenda?
