Carnival Corp. plans to start cultural cruises to Cuba next year, a move that will give it an early entry to the struggling communist island amid thawing U.S.-Cuban relations.
Carnival said it won approval from the U.S. Treasury Department for cruises under its new fathom brand, which targets travelers who want to combine volunteering with their vacations. The cruise line plans to use a 710-passenger ship for the seven-day cruises, targeting “cultural, artistic, faith-based and humanitarian” experiences between Americans and Cubans. The company is still in talks with Cuban authorities for approval.

I know I will sound cynical but WHO wants to PAY to do volunteer work when supposed to be relaxing on a vacation? You do volunteer work everyday at your job because most people do more work than they get paid for. If I were going to Cuba and paying $3000 I would want to hang out on the island for five days and then leave. I'd return to the ship to sleep but spend most the days exploring a place that has been isolated for so long.
