The below linked news story is about recent study showing large extent of ASD people being robbed, etc., by presumed friends who take advantage of their naïveté.

Doesn't suprise me at all.

Not surprised but glad the issue is getting some publicity.

I'm not surprised either, but it's good this issue is getting some light.

What you gotta do is toughen up and be wise to people. Don't trust them. I might seem paranoid but I am only on guard against these types of leeches that come out of the woodwork only to use and abuse. It's not paranoia, just street smarts.

I have been victimized because I cannot NOT help somebody.

At one point, in school people at the end of the school day started asking me for "money for the bus," and I naively handed out more and more of my cash because I believed these people were stuck/in need. It was a weird blind spot in my intelligence because I was a smart kid, but unbelievably naive -- it's possible to be both.

After high school, the first acquaintances I made who were not people I grew up with or went to school with -- basically my first experience of making new friends with total strangers from "out there in the world," borrowed all kinds of things from me that I never got back, before they dropped contact with me. I lost a vinyl album, a massive guitar chord book that had cost a lot of money and was a Christmas present, a watch that was a birthday present, and other things.

It was my first experience that people are not always truly your friends.

At first I wasn't sure what "mate crimes" meant since "mate" is not normally used to describe a friend where I live. I think the local slang is more like "buddywhudsizname" and "cousint".

But seriously. I can't trust anyone who isn't a close family member or personal friend since I can't always tell if they're friend or foe. So trusting nearly all people is an issue.

Yes, sadly so true. Being taken advantage of in so many different ways. I too was used by so called friends in school for my lunch money, bus fare and also help with homework and any other thing they could think of. It has taken me years figuring out who really can be trusted and who is out there just to use you. But somehow I fear that this is the plight of many not just us in the autism world. This world is a sinister place....

yes, it took me way too long to learn that. but I reassure myself of my own self-worth by telling myself, "this is a hellworld I'm in, an evil world, but I only live in this evil world, I am not OF this evil world, I do NOT partake of its evils."

It's worse when you can't even trust your own family members not to abuse you and keep you out of harm's way.

sometimes you have to put major distance between yourself and your family.

A guy with autism and a low IQ who is constantly put through the wringer by internet sociopaths, to the point where they have him destroying his possessions and even getting arrested while they all laugh at him on Kiwi Farms. He burned his house down by using a coffeepot with a worn cord, and the trolls just laughed. He lost all his possessions. He smashed his Playstation with a hammer because a troll promised to give him $9k if he did. And then there's the chronicling of everything in his life for troll amusement.
