Court Documents Reveal Gruesome Details of Deadly Shooting

Court documents paint a horrifying picture of the night a 15-year-old girl was killed.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports Kara Hopkins' boyfriend ripped her clothes off at a party after he allegedly shot her in the head.

Witnesses say Hopkins was partying with several others at the Willow Cove apartments in West Jordan over the weekend.

Court documents say her boyfriend, 18-year-old Parley Dutson, pushed her against a wall and told her to have sex with him. When she resisted, witnesses say Dutson pulled out a black revolver and shot her in the back of the head.

Witnesses say Dutson then continued to remove Hopkins' clothes. When apartment security entered the unit, they say she was naked from the waist down and Dutson was in a sexual position with her.

An affidavit indicates Dutson told security he was intentionally trying to rape her.

The victim's mother tells Eyewitness News Dutson was high on hallucinogenic mushrooms and marijuana at the time. But a narcotics expert we talked with says mushrooms do not cause violent outbursts.

"A handful of mushrooms is not an excuse for pointing a gun at someone and pulling the trigger," retired narcotics officer Charles Illsley said.

After the shooting, Kara Hopkins was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Her boyfriend was booked on attempted murder charges. Hopkins later died. Now Dutson will likely be charged with murder.

What this news story didn't say is that the murderer/rapist was a "lost boy" - meaning that he'd been kicked out of Warren Jeff's polygamist compound and was trying to live a normal assymilated life in Salt Lake City.

FYI - they were both students in Murray Highschool. The Symphony I play with sometimes rehearses and plays concerts there.

You mean he was one of the boys that was 'kicked out' of a polygamist community because there were 'too many males'? Quite the bizarre news item. Usually psychedelic mushrooms make someone quiet, not aggresive. Raping the girl after shooting her is monsterous. Another disturbed young person that makes me wonder what sort of generation is being raised these days. Sounds like he could have become another Ted Bundy....

I don't know much about 'shrooms - I've never done them. But I know from lots of experience that marijuana tends to make someone more mellow rather than violent.

He should be taken to jail, gang raped, shot, then gang raped again.

That's so soft! I'm thinking like a lot more torturous stuff should happen to him for many many years!

mmm, I believe in an eye-for-an-eye punishment as well, but then we learn nothing and become as barabaric as the initial perpetrator. This kind of crap makes my opinion of the wider world continually slide.

I suppose he'll spend the rest of his life in jail, in some sort of solitary confinement. Just guessing, but doesn't the criminal population hate rapists?? Not to mention the heinousness of his crime. Certainly he'll be found guilty, wot with the witnesses. But they'll never be able to keep him in a cell with other inmates. I imagine that'll prolly be just punishment, sitting in a cell by himself until he dies of old age.

Even if this lad was stoned off his nut, there's something seriously wrong with him ! ! Perhaps if he was abandoned in the middle of the outback with a day's worth of water, and a piece of paper showing pics of which lizards are edible, and if after six months he made it to civilization, then we could talk rehabilitation.

Sadly, this is the type of situation these so called "lost boys" found themseleves in.

They were just pushed out of the gates of a closed community and made to fend for themselves in a pretty inhospitable desert. Of course, they weren't as far from civilizations as the middle of the Outback... But once they did get to "civilization" they weren't able to relate to it as such, since the FLDS are never allowed to have contact with anyone outside of their closed community. They think we're all going to lead them to sin and hell. No wonder they are so messed up and unable to cope in our society.

I do have experience with the mushrooms in question (much longer than the statute of limitations ago, I might add), and they made me feel anything but violent. They made ordinary circumstances a bit overwhelming, and I absolutely would not have been able to handle any sort of violence in my environment.

My thoughts on the matter:
(1) He had lost his friends, family, everything he ever had, and been told that he was going to hell. It can't get any worse than that, can it?
(2) He had been raised to think of women as property.
(3) Many people who become schizophrenic, do so when they hit their teens, and often with the help of some intoxicant or another. What he did sounds psychotic to me, so there is probably more to this story than what's in the press.

Funny story about that...

I worked with this gay guy who'd moved to Utah from Vermont. He told me that during one of his first sexual experiences in Utah, he took a guy home from a bar, one thing led to another, and they were getting naked. He saw this special underwear (which apparently has some symbols printed on it) and asked what he was wearing and what the symbols on it were. He replied that he couldn't say or he'd go to hell.

For the record, this guy was kicked out of the FLDS (Fundamentalist Latter-Day Saint) group that's led by Warren Jeffs. The LDS aka Mormons no longer practice polygamy. There are, however, a number of splinter groups where it is still done.

*(The ceremony is secret, so take what you find about it on the internet with a grain of salt. Usually the people who go and talk about it are either trying to discredit the Mormon religion because they're part of some "rival" religion or they are pissed off former Mormons).
