(clicky)Michigan court says juvenile prisoners can be raped, abused and neglected with no recourse
Michigan imprisoned a number of 17-year-old juveniles with adults, and prison guards and other staff did a terrible job of providing these children sufficient monitoring and protection. These kids were raped and abused by other inmates and even sexually assaulted by guards. In a lawsuit, the plaintiffs claim that Gov. Rick Snyder, the Michigan Department of Corrections, and 15 wardens from Michigan prisons "violated their civil rights— essentially failing to protect an at-risk segment of the prison population and demonstrating 'deliberate indifference to their safety.'" According to the Detroit News:
"The lawsuits describe alleged incidents in which teens were forced into sex acts by adult prisoners through physical violence or the threat of it. In some cases, corrections facility employees are accused of sexual harassment, allowing assaults to happen or ignoring requests for help from teen inmates."
but the Michigan court ruled against them, saying that prisoners don't seek out public services covered by the civil rights law in the way members of the general public do, but "are compelled to be there, and must be content, for the most part, with the services provided." IOW, if you're raped and abused/neglected in a Michigan prison, deal with it. AFAIC, this stinks of fascism. a civilized nation would not allow this to routinely happen.

It's dereliction of responsibility on a huge scale.

But that's true of most prisons, and we've succeeded in dehumanizing criminals, so nobody cares.

Current and former Michigan residents on WP have said Michigan is a bullying, if you can't suck it it up, it's your fault type of place.

what about that part of the constitution that proscribes "cruel and unusual punishments," no longer counts? the constitution IS just a piece of paper conveniently twisted to suit the petty hatreds of the PTB and their lackies. Michigan sounds more and more like a northern florida or 'bama.

To paraphrase an old Michigan Tourism commercial from the late '80's to the early '90: "Michigan, the feeling is never. :skull: "

That's not entirely true unless you live in the U.P.
Michigan (the main peninsula) is better than all the other Great Lake States, now what Wisconsin has gone to pots under Walker

Ohio is the state where getting any help even form government is considered shameful and you will be looked down upon by your peers.
Ohio also provides very little services for its residents, including medicad (Ohio hasn't implemented medicad expansion yet and my mother cannot get health insurance or medicad in Ohio).

The only real bad thing about Michigan besides Detroit, is the Republican conservative majority hell bent on dismantling worker rights and the roads.

Ohio is the Texas of the North
Or
Ohio is the New Jersey of the Great Lakes.

I've lived in both states and I can attest to how bad the Ohio educational system is along with programs for the disabled.

referring to ohio, any state that requires its citizens to get calibrated speedos [not even one mile per hour leeway on speed limits, ticked both for over and under] is totally unreasonable.

The biggest division of the Ohio State Police is the highway patrol.

Tickets literally make up a double digit percentage of the Ohio's revenue.

If you are from Michigan and get ticketed in Ohio, you must pay the ticket on the spot or go to jail until it can be paid in cash or credit.

West Virgina is the only state that comes close to matching Ohio in traffic strictness.

that place sounds like an inner circle of hell on earth. :x why isn't there an exodus of long-suffering folk from that place just like blacks fled the south during jim crow?

Because Ohioans are proudly Ohio through and through.
They also love their culture and low taxes, while hating Michigan with a passion (predates Michigan's statehood, Ohio blocked Michigan's entry into the Union a few times for political gain)
They don't care for Indiana and Pennsylvania either.

Ohio population has been growing steadily, while Michigan population shrunk at the last census by a decent amount.

Ohio also has the second highest rate of executions behind Texas.

Ohio could very well be the 8th ring of hell.

I had to drive through it in 1988, it struck me as cold-blooded [psychologically] a place as Washington dc.

It's not that cold blooded...
I mean there is plenty of bad things about Ohio, but that isn't it.

D.C. also has changed a lot as the middle class and rich have moved back into it.

Ohio isn't the only state where going on welfare is considered shameful. PA is just as bad. I used to say that PA is the Alabama of the North. In reality, PA is the Mississippi of the North. Like Michigan, I could never figure out why the blue collar workers are always voting against their own best interests. Considering that the UAW had a strong presence around here (considering that Harley and Caterpillar used to be major employers here in York County, and Chrysler, and later, Volkswagen, had a plant in New Stanton.). For example, Caterpillar management wanted to break the UAW back in the early '90's. Guess what plant they closed down in order to break the UAW? They closed down York, which, ironically, was the most pro-management, most productive, and most cost efficient plant in the company, as compared to their plants in Springfield, and Decatur, IL. I guess it goes to prove the maxim, "Not all conservatives are stupid people, but all stupid people are conservatives."
