The mosque is no more. Instead a skyscraper is going there.

Perhaps for the better.
I don't see the problem with a mosque at that location (actually: it'd be a nearly ultimate expression of tolerance if it were built), but becouse of the fight over it, perhaps it is better for everyone to not hit the hornets' nest

Interesting? was the development plan opposed and successfully replaced?

there should have been no "fight" about it. we should just have said NO and that be the end.

putting one up wouldn't be tolerance...it would be an insult to injury.

I agree whole-heartedly. The whole concept was insulting.

It's a religion, not an insult.

The real insult is white Christian Americans doing everything they can to make immigrants (especially Muslims) feel unwelcome in our own country.

Plus, "Ground Zero Mosque" is a loaded term that obviously intends to equate Islam with terrorism, and I really wish people would stop using that phrase.

^ Yeah, I wouldn't call the proposed Islamic centre at that site an "insult" at all.

On the contrary, it's a place where Muslims can exercise their religious freedom, and non-Muslims can learn more about a faith that's been too often conflated – or considered outright synonymous – with terrorism. I think it would've been a grand idea.

But the decision to not build it seems to have been a commercial decision from the site's owner. That's certainly fair enough. At least it wasn't done by government legislation infringing on religious freedoms.

Glad they'll build something else.

putting aside personal opinions for just a second - what was the reasoning given for the ground zero mosque project to be rejected?

But the people who had wanted to build the Mosque weren't the same ones who destroyed the twin towers. People should not be penalized simply for believing in the same religion as our current enemies. My family, as you know, are German Lutherans, and I can tell you, my family still tells stories about how they were singled out during WWI, accused of being Un-American for their religion and ethnicity. The very last thing we should be doing is demonizing fellow Americans.
