This is the first time I ever heard about an autistic being on death row even though I am sure there have been others.

I don't know why they can't just free inmates when they are obviously innocent.

Because prosecutors who make deals with scumbags for their perjured testimony, and conceal exculpatory evidence, pull out all the stops to keep those convictions from being overturned.
