I just felt a seismic jolt in central Orange County, California.

The last time I felt something this strong, it was about 4.5 on the Richter scale.

No damage to be found, but there are car alarms going off in the parking lot.

Did you notice how long the shaking lasted?
Did you have a sense of the kind of motion involved? (more up and down, side to side?)

When you last had a similar sensation and it correlated to a measured 4.5 magnitude event, how far were you from the epicenter, if you happen to recall?

That's morbidly fascinating. I've actually never witnessed a real earthquake in my life.
Maybe it's time to do some research... :)

There was about 5 to 10 seconds of "rattling", followed by a sharp sideways jolt, ending with a rapid fading of the "rattling". Event time was 06:42:34 PST on January 06, 2016. Epicenter was 4km (2mi) north of Banning, California.

Magnitude was 4.5!

Here in Southern California, it's not unusual for 1 or 2 quakes each week to be strong enough for people to feel them.

Wasn't there something about California eventually falling off into the ocean? 8O

Get out of California! This big one is coming soon! Then the Yellowstone Calderon will blow -- and massive destructive and carnage will ensue!

The end is near, folks! Don't buy any new rolls of stamps! You'll never use them all!

What is intreging and a bit scary is the intensity and consistantly of eathquakes going on in Oklahoma.

Personally scary is that an eathquake of catagory 5 and possibly 6 will eventually occur here in the
New York area. That would probably kill and injure more people and cause more long term paralysis then anything but maybe the really big one in California. There is a fault that ends near the Indian Point nuclear plant and one under 125th Street in Harlem capable of producing a 6. The infrastructure is very old and people would have no idea what to do.

Potential for earthquake in New York City exists

But I still have checks left in my checkbook!

Thanks! After 20+ years in California, it's easy.

I remember a similar earthquake when I was about 10 years old on about the same measurement. Many of my old classmates thought I was shaking the tables when this happened. Thankfully, there was hardly no damage anywhere in Portland.

I don't want the Puerto Rico trench to go, it will wash away my entire state into the Gulf and everything in the Atlantic!! ! At least you in the Pacific have mountains nearby to run to! It hasn't gone in 230 years and earthquakes on satellite faults since have been up to magnitude 8!! !

Was this a regular earthquake or a North Koreaquake? Family SocOfAutism may be moving to the Moon for awhile until this H-bomb nonsense settles down...

When I was little, I was at my grandmas, and the room I was in started shaking. The computer was rattling along with the router, and the tv cut off. At first I thought it was a train, since my grandma lives near a train track, but I soon found out it was a earthquake. It was a pretty weird, scary, and exciting experience.
