I can't see anyone winning in this situation. Assuming no-one does anything stupid - and it's the police who are most likely to do something stupid in this case - such as opening fire, it should be possible to end it on a neutral draw, in which they withdraw without getting their way and no-one gets charged.

The other option, of course, is a negative draw, a lose-lose situation in which everyone there is killed, but they kill more cops in the process...

These guys like to talk about how "tyrannical" the US govt is; I'd like to see them try something like this in Russia, India, China, etc.

Just wait them out and let them have the stupid building until they're ready to leave on their own, it is just some insignificant DNR outpost in a desolate part of Oregon so who cares? Escalating the situation can only make things worse for everyone.

Yeah. When I first saw this news I immediately started thinking about the Branch Dravidians and Waco, Texas. These things never end well.

Here's a pretty good explanation about the underlying case:

If they were, they'd be carried out in body bags by now.

A lot of that federal land includes national parks, where we all can go to enjoy hiking, camping, and hunting. I've heard of all the cry to privatize those areas so capitalism can run it's course and make everyone rich. The fact is, though, those wild places we all enjoy would be cut off from us as it would be private land, we'd see the end to most of that pristine wilderness for the sake of commercial gain, and federal workers like park rangers, with all their high wages and benefits, would lose their jobs, to be replaced by workers paid a minimum wage. Sure, that doesn't fit the Bundy situation, but the same people who are calling for privatization of public lands also have their eye on national parks.
As for Bundy: as I understand it, all his neighbors had no problem with paying the fees he was bitching about. That, and the courts had continuously ruled against Bundy, but he continuously ignored the judgement and kept breaking the law.

Not to debate this with you personally. But, it seems to me that if Ammon Bundy hadn't escalated the situation himself this would have been a peaceful rally that would have only made local news, not national/world news.

Also, everyone should care. It's one thing to protest against the government but a completely different thing to take over property that doesn't belong to you in doing so. I don't think anyone should condone breaking the law to make a point.

One last thing. We have plenty enough nut jobs in our state as it is without having to import them. Go pee in your own pool Bundy. :geek:

The Hammonds don't support Ammon Bundy or his militia. It seems that even other militia groups are distancing themselves from this incident.

Saw an infographic from Dox47's link. This describes a major grievance among these ranchers.

This looks like chest thumping if you ask me. People who showcase like this look ridiculous. They said they'd leave if the locals ask. This reminds me of the mormon whittling gangs I've heard of, they'd just whittle a stick around someone who misbehaved, I always thought that story was odd.

I think this is civil disobedience.

Ehh, all kinds of leftist groups have been occupying stuff for decades, and usually getting at least some of what they want. Now some white "right-wing militia" guys are doing it, and they're terrorists, "Vanilla ISIS," and Montel Williams wants them shot.

If it were members of some Indian tribe occupying a government building, how much different would the reactions be, on both sides?

How do you mean leftist groups get part of what they want through occupying government buildings? Some examples, please.

Start with Berkeley, 1964 … You're my age, and you need for me to catalogue for you all the times a protest or sit-in or riot ended with authorities caving or compromising on various issues? Seriously? It's not a controversial statement. Rather like remarking that it tends to rain a lot in Seattle. Not my fault if this is somehow news to you.
