Paralympic swimmer with Asperger's:

Too bad they're not televising these events here in the US, would like to see inspirational stories like this (she's pretty cute too). Thanks for posting.

I don't get it.

She is described in a press article as "intellectually disabled" - but how do you qualify as having Asperger's if you are intellectually disabled?

E.g. the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) requires the following for Asperger's syndrome:

They're probably assuming that she is, because she has Autism. I suppose she has coordination problems as well.

Swimming competitors are grouped into three categories, two of which are sub-divided. She competes as part of the third group, for those with a learning disability, as she has neither physical disability nor a visual impairment.

Where does a developmental disability lie in these sub-catagories? Is it treated as the same as a learning disability?

In the UK we're getting 15 hours of (mostly) live coverage each day.
These athletes are an inspiration to us all.

And yes; she is a looker.

Odd, since usually it seems those on the spectrum are far more intelligent than "normal" people.

I suspected she could have some kind of coordination/neurologcal problems that may be the reason she's in the Paralympics.

I guess so like me perhaps dispraxia?
It must be hard to "fall over" in a swimming pool?

You can have MR with AS as long as it's tested during the school years. Says such in the DSM-IV-TR in the expanded text (Gillberg's doesn't have an IQ level as it follows Hans' paper closer, where it had the full range of IQs; it's just that they all spoke).

Interesting how AS makes you eligible for the paralympics. (Well, not really, as I know how it limits people.)

About a third of the way down the page you'll see the criteria for deciding if someone fulfils the criteria for 'intellectual disability'. Jessica-Jane Applegate is classified in the Paralympics as S14, i.e. swimmer with intellectual disability. So, she's in that category purely for intellectual reasons and there's no mention of a physical disability, e.g. dyspraxia or hypermobility. According to the criteria, competitors in that group must have an IQ of under 75, which would exclude most people with Aspergers, but I assume Jessica-Jane's IQ must be below 75.

Hello, as I was looking at her pictures on internet, I was telling to myself "She's got the look" :)

And then, this article where it's clearly said that she had her 16th birthday during the competition and "suffers from Asperger": Borough waves off Paralympian Jessica-Jane


That's pretty cool to become an Olympic Champion (wth big letters!) for a teenage birthday, don't you think 8)

I agree, I think it's sad that these events aren't being televised in the US, as I would love to be able to see these types of stories. It's better than the nasty election that's going on.
