(clicky)"smith" lead singer Gayle McCormick passed in suburban St. Louis, from cancer at age 67
she was a BABE and a HALF! and she had more white soul in her little pinky than anybody I can think of nowadays. :( RIP :(

Even though I had only just turned 12 that fall of 1969 and the "mono" sound was coming out from my tiny transister radio her power vocals on "Baby It's You" would make me stop whatever I was doing. It was different from anything else going on then.

the people around her did her no favors, her life went down a rabbit hole after the early 70s. I saw her on a late 80s video where she subbed for grace slick with the Jefferson airplane/starship reunion video. I believe she did local open mics in the st. Louis area a decade ago or so, until her health declined.

...A post-Smith minor solo hit single , " It's A Cryin' Shame " , was nice .
BTW , since you're here...I kept trying to add to your post about Sonny James but couldn't .
" Running Bear " had been #1 Pop the week I was born in Johnny Preston's original .
James obviously had a " C&W remakes of slightly old pop stuff " franchise going , I'm a little unertain what I think of him myself .
Did you/your parents like him a lot ?

my parents liked sonny james enough to buy one of his records that had the live concert version [@ the Houston astrodome 1969] of "running bear." other than that they were not especially musical.

I think so, it's been 4+ decades since I heard it.
