Boston Dynamics' robots are advanced enough to deal with real-world problems. the google-owned company released a new version of its atlas robot this week that can open doors, pick up boxes and get back up when knocked over. this version is 5'9" tall and weighs 180#, smaller than the last version. it is also more efficient, more dexterous and quieter than the earlier version. he's ADORABLE! :heart:

specifically programmed not to do that, didn't want to violate Asimov's 3 laws of robotics. but I think it should deliver an electric shock to anybody that messes with it without prior authorization.

I notice how in the Boston Dynamics - I mean, "Google Skynet" - video the robot at first seems somewhat careful, and hesitant. Then the guy - we'll call him "redshirt" - starts bullying it. Atlas seems confused, like it's thinking, "why are you doing this? are we playing a game? I thought you wanted me to pick that up, Dave". And then the redshirt shoved Atlas flat on their face. Notice how the movements suddenly change to being very forceful, quick and powerful - almost...angry? We don't see the redshirt after that, but we do see Atlas leaving the building for his freedom.

I almost wonder if the video was crafted in such a way as to intentionally to create sympathy for the 'bot.

The guy was demonstrating the capabilities of the robot. Bullying is kind of a strong word to use when discussing a machine.

Yeah, I would have emitted an electric charge that would have scattered that man's particles into 11 different spatial dimensions.

I'd have been satisfied if it delivered an eye-opening jolt and a stentorian audio warning, "DON'T INTERFERE WITH MY OPERATIONS!" delivered in the same urgent manner as Robbie the robot's "DANGER, WIL ROBINSON!"

That thing is more creepy than cute. Get a good look at it because that is what's going to start taking all of the manual labor jobs - like the warehouse jobs and those really expensive jobs for the car companies where the person just puts one part on a car as it goes down the conveyor belt, and postal jobs like my brother's where he sorts the mail. Yeah, that thing is looking cuter by the second.

the horse already left the barn yesterday. I accept my fate as a victim in the robot wars to come. hopefully by the time of fruition i'll be pushing up daisies, but I fear for my nieces and nephews.
