(clicky)Canada to experiment with basic universal income for its citizens starting in 2017

why can't we try something like that? for a portion of what we waste on the MIC complex we could probably do it also without too much drama.

This is perfect! This will give you all a REAL reason to run off to Canada once Trump becomes "The Don" to the White House.

GO TRUMP! GO TRUMP! GO TRUMP!

From the article:

Quote:
The Canadians are about to start giving away money

Oh HELL no!

There have been experiments like this before even here in America believe it or not, but this is for the whole of Ontario?

other nations are studying it as well. eventually when the only jobs remaining are too techy for most IQs, the universal basic income will be seen as necessary as bread and circuses in an earlier age.

So the OP expects to get paid for doing nothing? The article doesn't take into account how hospitalizations will be paid and what about housing? $800-1,000 a month will hardly cover food and such. And I'm sure these people wanting to get paid for sitting on their asses will want a vehicle and a cell phone to boot. How is all that going to be paid for?

if automation comes to pass and 70% of the workforce is no longer needed then there might not be a choice

Well, I know we have a nursing shortage so some of you can use that free education you're gonna be getting and come on over to the greener side of the fence.

one of these days the working class will wake up and find no more work for them, all automated somehow. and since the majority of people are working class, you are going to have major unrest. not too many non-lethal ways of dealing with that which don't involve some kind of taxation and public expenditure/income redistribution.

A national basic income is a interesting idea . I read somewhere austrailia give poor people loans to start a business. That might be another idea to consider.

^^^if only America could see things past the end of its collective nose and do something like that, instead of the current route of coddling billionaires.

If only this and the free college and university education were happening in my province. I can't really complain though; Here in B.C. the asset limit for persons with disabilities was increased from $5000 to $100,000.

Our main opposition party supports a basic income grant.

Conservatives don't like such an idea, but many people will use the money to better themselves and make more money. It's like the parable of the talents. You can use it for good or ill.

There are people who are so unhealthily well-off that they don't know what to do with their money, and yet there are so many deserving causes they could be supporting.

Milton Friedman played with the idea, believe it or not Richard Nixon was fond of the idea but couldn't pass anything thru congress before his presidency went down in flames. Just giving people a check is better than giant bureaucracy that we've erected for the welfare of the people, the 'war on poverty' has been a complete and utter failure. There are a lot of government agencies that shouldn't exist or could just be completely streamlined. The IRS is another perfect example.
