Though porn is not something I condone personally, it is ridiculous to punish people for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Q: What do you do when you are banned from a website?

A: You find another website.

"XHamster" is not the only pornsite out there, nor is it necessarily the best or most popular pornsite.

I understand that all of these companies are trying to make a statement by refusing to do business with North Carolina, but I don't think all of the people in the state should be punished because of it. And no, I'm not talking about not having access to a porn site. Fnord is right, there are a ton of other porn sites out there.

Celebrities have canceled shows, Hollywood is calling for a ban on filming in the state, a bank is cancelling plans to create jobs there, conventions have been cancelled, etc. This is affecting regular people who likely have had no part whatsoever in passing the law, and probably many who also don't approve of it.

There are plenty of laws that my state has passed which I don't agree with. What if companies started to try to make a statement en masse against all of us living here, and people lost jobs and income?

I understand the need to protest, but I think there's got to be a better way to do it.

There would be a better way if the people of NC were willing to turn out and protest en mass against it.
Right now the practically the whole of NC doesn't seem to care outside of a few loud handful.

The people of NC don't even vote en mass, except for the conservative voters.

There are more companies announcing their departure including Paypal.
Apple is threatening to put their server farm expansion on ice until the law is repealed.
etc...

Though this new law is polling quite favorably in NC and all the recent polls favor the keeping the law at the expense of the economy.

We'll see what happens in a few months. Whether or not the law still stands, I expect that about half of the companies that bolted will find a way to quietly move back to NC.

Just follow the money trail.

It seems to me that the new law was passed specifically because of the ordinance in Charlotte allowing transgender people to use the bathrooms of their gender identity. The law made it impossible for municipalities to enact their own anti-discrimination laws prohibiting discrimination based upon sexual orientation and gender identity.

There were several counties, cities, and towns that already had laws (which are no longer legal, apparently) protecting the rights of LGBT people in NC, so it can't be everyone that is in favor of the new law.

So they didn't like what was going on in Charlotte, and wanted to figure out a way to keep it from being legalized in more areas. And in doing so, removed protections that were already in place. Now I think they have realized that they f***ed up, and are trying to backtrack. Because it looks like the governor is trying to restore many of the rights taken away, but at the same time prevent any broader laws from being passed that would give transgender people the right to use the bathrooms corresponding to their gender.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-north-carolina-lgbt-law-20160412-story.html

So I guess that the boycotting of NC seems to be working somewhat. I doubt that it's going to make them change their minds about the bathrooms, though.

I hope more and more stuff gets cancelled. The law went into effect and perhaps the people of NC are getting unfairly penalized.. but if they arent speaking up, I think thats a big part of the problem.

The fact of this matter is: everyone should be treated with respect, period. We are in freaking 2016- hate over race, gender, sexual preference, etc.. needs to stop. It's so unfortunate so many people in the world (not just USA) are this immature. I don't expect everyone to love everyone, just respect! It's not hard to give.

The law will get struck down in Federal Court.

But this law exists to spur the voters into action and to back the current governor (R) and his GOP majority.
It's working, the GOP numbers in NC are polling higher than anytime in his administration, galvanizing the voters to support their current government.
The majority in NC have forgotten what the current government has done and are set to reelect them with a bigger majority, the longer this stand off persists.

The majority NC see this as the liberals states imposing their anti family value and anti religious values on NC.

If the governor and his GOP majority backtrack, then hand the Democrats a victory in November.
If the governor and his GOP majority keep on the current path and pass even more restrictions of this kind, they secure a super majority both state houses and the governor's reelection (he is a Republican).
The Democrats will literally be relegated to a handful of seats with no power to delay and/or block anything in NC, provided the current government doesn't fold on the issue before the November Election.

The voters in the South care more about these laws and their GOP governments defending these laws out of family and religious values, then they do about the corruption across the board these governments committed.

It's all part of the GOP's plan to hold on to the South.

I feel no sympathy for the state. If the government there wants to be idiots, they have to face the consequences.

It's 2016, maybe they can join us in the current year.

This is just exploiting a wedge issue for votes; ignoring it would be the better move, as a bunch of liberal musicians and such boycotting simply makes the tactic more effective. I have no issues with LGBT people, but if I lived in NC, I'd be pissed at a bunch of out of staters trying to interfere with my local government, and I imagine that's a common sentiment.

And I'm sure those North Carolinians you're so fond of were pissed off at the support the civil rights movement back in the '50's and '60's was getting from out-of-staters, too. Guess what, to do the right thing for a stepped on minority, sometimes you have to give bigots a shove.

This should be pinned to the top of the PP&R forum:
Joseph de Maistre wrote:

This includes states, counties, municipalities, and even social clubs.

Remember too, that NC is a Bible-Belt state where the people believe that microwave ovens and solar panels give off nuclear radiation, and that the Earth was created in 4004 BCE (5997 HE).

Did Dox47 say he was fond of these people? No.
I realize you two have history, but please consider just dealing with the argument, not the individual.

While it may seem that Dox47 made it personal to himself by discussing his psychology and speculating about how he might respond were he in their shoes, but the point he was making was clearly that resistance to external pressure may be more powerful than ethical argument as this kind of pressure plays out, not that he had any particular affection for them or their position on this issue.

There are many ways to discuss that idea without making it about him or personalizing your post in a way likely to incite Dox47 into some kind of snide counter about you and turning this into the kind of thing you usually get into with Raptor.

Please check your posts carefully to make sure they are not getting personal.

Imagine this instead of what you posted:

Would your post really have lost any value by omitting the personal snark?

Actually, in past threads he had said how he actually hates liberals in his own city, and feels more at home with good ol' boys, who he thinks aren't phonies. And while he has repeatedly claimed he is socially liberal, he seemingly dislikes either private out-of-staters or the feds interfering with how a state conducts itself. Knowing this - and yes, allowing myself to become incensed by my personal history with him - I fired off the post in question.
That said, understanding the need for civility in this forum, I will make an effort to curb my sudden outbursts of rage. In fact, if Dox ever wanted to bury the hatchet, I would be delighted. He needs only pm me.
