Let's hope it's a technical malfunction:

An Egypt Air flight on its way to Cairo from Paris went off radar Wednesday night, according to a tweet from the airline and from a journalist.

"An informed source at Egyptair stated that Flight no MS804, which departed Paris at 23:09 (CEST), heading to Cairo has disappeared from radar," the tweet read.

The airline said it would provide more details as they become available.

What We Know

EgyptAir Flight 804 from Paris to Cairo disappeared from radar over the Mediterranean Sea at 2:45 a.m. Cairo time on Thursday, the airline said.

The Airbus A320 was carrying 59 passengers and 10 crew members, EgyptAir said.

‘They just vanished’

“They did not radio for help or lose altitude,” said Ehab Mohy el-Deen, the head of Egypt’s civil aviation service. “They just vanished.”

He said that Greek air traffic controllers notified their Egyptian counterparts that they lost contact with the plane shortly before it was due to enter Egyptian airspace.

He added that it was too early to speculate on the cause of the disappearance or the fate of the airplane. “But,” he added, “this is not normal, of course.”

Five years ago I would've told you the transponder failed or it was a terrorist attack. Nowadays anything goes. But it disappeared over the Med, so it won't be a long term mystery. Many airliners went down there and their crashes been solved there. Plus that area is well covered with military radars from various states (with a US Navy base, Sixth Fleet, in nearby Italy) which will help find the fate of those on board that aircraft.

Very sad about the employees of EgyptAir though. They've been going through hell because of the multiple coups in their country and the sabotage of Metrojet flight 9268. They got rid of their A340 (four engined wide bodies) and two A320s (siblings to the one that disappeared).

"Egypt official: Jet crash more likely terror attack than technical failure"

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/worl ... /84579066/

Greek officials said Thursday that an EgyptAir flight that disappeared over the Mediterranean en route from Paris to Cairo with 66 people aboard apparently made two sharp turns then suddenly lost altitude before vanishing from radar.

Egyptian Civil Aviation Minister Sherif Fathi said the possibility of a terror attack as the cause of the crash of flight MS804 is "higher than that of a technical error,” Egypt's state-run newspaper Al-Ahram reported....

Greek civil aviation authorities say all appeared fine with the flight until air traffic controllers were preparing to hand it over to their Egyptian counterparts. The pilot did not respond to their calls, and the aircraft then vanished from radar just after entering Egyptian airspace.

“It turned 90 degrees left and then a 360-degree turn toward the right, dropping from 38,000 to 15,000 feet and then it was lost at about 10,000 feet,” said Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos.

I'm a bit of a plane crash fiend so this will be an interesting case to follow. I of course know egypt air had a case of pilot suicide, flight 990 over a decade ago due to the first officer forcing a nosedive.

"Theory internal blast 'tore right side' of EgyptAir jet"

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/ar ... d=11642935

Data from the final moments before EgyptAir flight MS804 crashed into the Mediterranean suggest an "internal explosion" tore through the right side of the aircraft, a pilot said.

Investigators trying to determine whether the A320 was brought down by terrorism or a technical fault are poring over a series of warnings indicating smoke filled the cabin shortly before it disappeared from radar.

French authorities confirmed that smoke detectors went off on board the flight a few minutes before it crashed but said it was not clear what caused the smoke or fire.

A commercial pilot with a major European airline told the Sunday Telegraph that other parts of the data log suggested that windows in the right side of the cockpit were blown out by an explosion inside the aircraft.
