I hope not.

The concept of a "hate crime" should be restricted to things the victim has no control over, such as their race religion or sexual orientation.

Adding "attacking cops" to such laws is ridiculous.

I think law enforcement have a very unsafe job and deserve this protection. It's only of concern to people who attack cops, so it won't effect the average citizen.

Very well. If someone targets someone because of a demographic they are part of than why not treat it as a hate crime

A person's religious beliefs and denominational affiliation are ultimately a personal choice (no matter how much some try to treat it like its compulsory). It is something which people have control over. Therefor either religious attacks wouldn't be hate crimes or the standard is wrong and affiliations of choice should be protected from hate crimes.

That may be true (I don't necessarily agree) but freedom of religion is in the constitution so that allows them protection under hate crime laws.

i agree with this definition. while religion is ultimately a personal choice, that is still a protected one.

still, people who mindlessly attack cops, who would never even think of causing unneeded suffering (like the morons on the news), need to be put in their place.

I'm sure there's a clause involved, such as:

"reason for the {whatever} was based solely on the victim's profession"

Hate for police
hate for Mormons
hate for women
hate for different cultures/races/whatever
hate for straight white men

All the same thing if the hate isn't based on the individual doing something "wrong".

Attacking a police officer carries a harsher punishment than attacking a civilian so making it a hate crime would be redundant. That and it is a state issue not a federal one.
