The Olympic committee is very corrupt (from what I've read and heard). However I want to say they perhaps had "some" good intentions of picking Rio when they did. Unless I'm missing something- was there proof back then that the area would be so horrible now?

I realize athletes have been training for years to be in olympics, so I hope it turns out well for the ones that go to it. It just seems like a mess overall and I hope it comes back to hurt olympic committee A LOT. I hate to sound bitter about it, but they could've prevented a ton of this. Maybe this will be a lession for future city picks- have a decent city that has good proof they can hold olympics or don't be in the nominations.. period. All the income a city gets from the olympics is fine and all, but when the city is so crappy.. thats not a good sign ever.

maybe the decision was made in good faith (i doubt it, but let's say it was). even then, it was irresponsible. the exact kind of mess may not have been predictable, but it was predictable that it would be a mess. it's like giving money to a teenager and simply trusting him to use it responsibly for the next few years and expecting it to contribute to his growth into a healthy adult. can he use the money responsibly? yes, certainly. can he gain more maturity from it? definitely. will he? unlikely...

in the end it sounds to me like this must have been the result of plain old corruption coupled with political correctness. disaster as a result is no surprise...

now this was probably not predictable, but, to make matters worse, there's a very real threat of this being a pretty good opportunity for terrorists to expand their reach and their activities into a territory where they previously had absolutely no presence or relevance whatsoever. and once terrorists exist somewhere... well, good luck getting rid of them

Like many, it makes me wonder what the leaders of Rio De Janiero were thinking when they first thought of bringing the Olympics to Rio.

It might be years before medical repercussions are known.

Some cities decline the honor of hosting.

Isn't that a great way to make survival an Olympic sport? :D

IMO, Rio definitely knew how to keep the Opening Ceremonies simple and low-key. When the Tokyo Games arrive four years from now, it'll be obvious that Tokyo will be ready on time.

I get why people think that this years Olympics in Rio is a disaster.. but there is no doubt that once a poor country like Rio has generated enough sales from the tourism, then some of that money can be returned to a continuing economy, if you get in alive and carry a pre med vaccination survival kit you're probably 'going for Gold' later.

It's a huge disaster. People getting sick, people getting robbed and much more.

From what I know- Rio promised to treat the water much better than they did. If I remember the news story right- 8 treatment plants were supposed to be built, only one was. Most of the water is supposed to be treated- only about half is!

Then there is the crime that has been reported.

I'm sure at the time of picking Rio as the Olympics city.. they thought it was a good idea. However when the city is in this bad of shape, more should've been done or they cancel the Olympics. I realize cancelling it is pretty harsh- but people's health and safety are more important than sports, period.

Then there's the tv coverage of the Olympics that is crap (in USA at least, not sure if its this bad everywhere)- broadcasts on NBC are on tape delay, they have filler stuff between events, don't always show the full event, etc. So stupid.

Last but not least- Hope Solo is a sore loser and needs to grow up.
