I'm glad you're happy about something.

However, I included something to just think about.

Well, I guess that would positively affect those people that work.
As for the other people....

Sorry Angela, but at this point even the most conservative economists have come to the conclusion that raising the minimum wage is good for the economy. It's good for workers and it's good for local businesses. WalMart may be sad, but f**k WalMart.

I don't do Walmart. I'm thinking about the small businesses. The economy probably needs to pick up first before a wage increase would help. Businesses will have some time to see what happens because it's going to go in increments. If I was in business, I'd cut down hours so I wouldn't have to pay insurance and hire fewer people. It's going to increase food prices too. I don't eat out so that wouldn't bother me.

That's a valid concern, Angela. It seems to make intuitive sense that it would hurt small businesses. In truth though, what we've actually seen happen when the minimum wage go up is that local business-owners have more money come through their doors. When people are making more they're not going out of town to spend it; they're buying what they need right in their communities. Seeing more activity also means there's not much need to cut hours.

Why didn't Obama's stimulus work then?

Whether it worked is contentious.

Anyway, giving money to a few people a few times is not the same as changing how much they bring home with every paycheck.

A few people? The whole nation got money - you're just one little state. Several places it says the stimulus didn't work and that was to a whole nation. This won't work either. The economy isn't even up and running. It's being done too soon and small businesses are going to be lost along with jobs.

Another thing, other jobs are going to have to increase their pay which will only increase everything else and you're back to square one. What needs to happen is the stock market needs to crash to reset everything again, however, they said that would bring the worst depression unlike this country has ever seen.

Yeah, many of the best economists in the world disagree on the net effects, though there is no consensus. The trend seems to be that it is a net positive What is known is that it increases the standard of living and that it doesn't shutter small businesses. Those are scare tactics with no basis in reality. Anyone who has told you that small businesses will suffer or that costs will just rise to meet wages is either lying or misinformed; that does not match what we see in reality.

I'll also remind you that Washington has a much stronger economy than your state, and twice as many people plus a million on top of that. So even if there were a bit of shakiness at first (they said there would be when we did this same thing in Seattle, it never came) we're in good shape. We're all good here, and all signs are that this will help Washingtonians; workers and business owners alike.

Congratulations to you Bill and your fellow citizens of the Evergreen State who voted in favor! :wtg:

Oregon could be one of the next states to have a minimum wage hike, which is as of July 1st, 2016 is $9.75/hour, but next summer the minimum wage will be $11.25/hour.
