Quote:
Sweden’s towns and villages have been ordered to make preparations for a possible military attack in the latest sign of the country’s growing anxiety at its newly belligerent Russian neighbour

Anyone Swedes on here able to elaborate on this story?

Is this news real? Out of the blue, Russia wants to attack Sweden? I don't get it.

Sounds like a fairly reasonable precaution to me based on that article, and it does seem like a precaution not like they're preparing for war or anything. I mean with all the current turmoil and conflict in the world, and all this I hear of Russia being involved in this or that....I can see why a country right next to Russia might want to be prepared to offer some protection to its citizens should violence occur.

Its not that clear cut, seems more like safety precautions in the event something like that did occur...its not like russia declared war on them or anything. The title of this seems like it was a little bit misleading.

Sweden doesn't even border Russia. Why would it be the first attacked?

Finland is the country that should worry.

I've asked a Swedish friend and they seem to think it's just the media scaremongering as usual.

Though, I wouldn't be surprised if Russia made a move on another country again. Have you SEEN how corrupt that government is? It's pretty scary honestly.

Exactly.

Finland borders Russia. Finland was part of Russia during the Czars. And Putin doubtless considers himself the rightful heir of the Czars to still own Finland. In fact Putin probably is trying to undo the sale of Alaska to the US as we speak. Lol!

Finland is an interesting place. Culturally not like the Noridc countries, still many close ties to Russia.

I used to sell things to Russian companies, shipping instructions were always to near the Finland - Russia border as they would 'take care' of getting it through customs. And I was working for a large, well known international IT company at the time. It was just accepted that this was how you did business there.

Also used to receive russian customer payments from British Virgin Islands. If they pay directly then people in Russia find out how much business the company is doing and will want a piece of it.

No I haven't seen it. I mean I've seen it presented that way. But when I've pushed aside all the media hype, I haven't seen anything all that bad that isn't comparable to any other government, like the United States for example.

But it seems clear that we're supposed to be going back to Cold War era fear of the Commies.

I would have Belarus & Latvia down as Russia's next targets to take over tbh. The west would do absolutely nothing about it too.

Do you guys have any idea how small these countries are? When the Nazis invaded, they took the Danish capital during the night, and the Norwegian capital on the following day. That was in 1940. Things move a little faster nowadays.

The Swedish Åland islands lie smack in the middle of the Baltic sea. Whoever controls the islands, controls the Baltic. There's been a lot of spying activity lately, presumably by the Russians.

Admittedly, the Russian economy is quite small for such a large country, and Putin's been making some significant cuts in military spending lately, but being prepared for every eventuality is not a bad idea when you are living next to a bear.

putin just wants to distract russians, and others, from their problems. namely, ageing, shrinking demographic, shriveling economy, gradual loss of a buffer between them and the west...

they're insecure, and i'm still not buying any of the "proof" thaf they meddled with podesta and in the election.

Oh Gawd, I'm an idiot. Got it mixed up.
I'm just trying to distract myself because I am sad about Berlin. Not paying attention.

Size-wise, Finland isn't small, it's just bit smaller than Germany.

Unless you are talking about population.
