Turkish President Erdogan wants the voters of Turkey to give him emergency powers that would remove checks and balanced. The Turkish government attempted to hold a rally of Turkish voters in the Netherlands, but the Dutch have intervened, not letting the foreign minister land and detaining a diplomat who tried to enter the country by car.

In retaliation, Erdogan has called the Dutch people a "Nazi remnant" and the Dutch embassy and consolates have been cordoned off.

This situation has come out of the blue and seems to be escalating. What does this mean for NATO, with both the Netherlands and Turkey being members?

I like to think of NATO as an assemblage of democratic states, existing to provide common defense for their liberty. If Erdogan wants to give himself emergency powers at the expense of the checks and balances in Turkey, apparently to set himself up as his country's strongman, then I think there's little choice in my mind but to stand with the Netherlands.
