CNN: US drops largest non-nuclear bomb in Afghanistan

Quote:
Washington (CNN)The US military has dropped an enormous bomb in Afghanistan, according to four US military officials with direct knowledge of the mission.
A GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb, nicknamed MOAB, was dropped at 7 p.m. local time Thursday, the sources said.
The MOAB is also known as the "mother of all bombs." A MOAB is a 21,600-pound, GPS-guided munition that is America's most powerful non-nuclear bomb.

The bomb was dropped by an MC-130 aircraft, operated by Air Force Special Operations Command, according to the military sources.
They said the target was an ISIS tunnel and cave complex as well as personnel in the Achin district of the Nangarhar province.

Or, quit supporting ISIS, building mosques on Ground Zero, and giving these people social promotions, domestically. You would think there is some kind of moral dilemma.

As smoke is a sign of fire, crony capital is a sign of the broken window fallacy.

Then, Afghanistan gets rebuilt, by a morally-exhausted West bloc.

Geez, I turned the TV on, immediately----and, googled----and, no one else seems to be reporting this. I would think it would be EVERYWHERE!! If this is true, it's terribly unsettling.

Sidebar: The soldier that I think they're possibly talking about, that was killed Saturday, in Afghanistan, was from Maryland----37, married, 5 kids, Special Forces (according to our local news, when it happened).

MOAB is the new normal. Normal, everyday people have an intuitive understanding of how things really work, and, on some level, they're ok with it. As Deek Jackson says, so long as they can get rid of their excretia, at the press of a button.

Ask an easygoing, average American what goes on, in the Mid East.

Damn, all I wanted for this nation was peace after decades of intermittent war and well hidden imperialism. It seems like nationalist warhawk Trump isn't going to be the person to deliver, far from it.

There is no reason why identifying with a specific country, means that you intervene, somewhere else (everywhere else.)

As I understand it they are dropping this thing on a spot high up in the mountains -mountains honeycombed with enemy tunnels- basically a subterranean ISIS army base. Its not being dropped in a populated area, and it IS being dropped on a major enemy stronghold.

So I dont see the problem.

There isn't normally, but anything Trump does is evil.

No, you are right of course. I spoke out of term and hatefully without the full knowledge of the situation. My apologies, I simply need to learn to control myself better.

They have no agriculture, manufacturing, or financial exchange. So, there is a hidden source.

The new normal? What?!? Really???

The MOAB came about more than a decade ago, during the Bush II years.

It was meant to replace the "Daisy Cutter," BLU-82B, which nickname derived from blasting bunkers, anything standing, and caves by shockwave blast and concussive depressurization that instantly suffocates anyone within these structures in a daisy flower patterned blast. It was used since the Vietnam war and was the biggest non-nuclear bomb at the time. But it was chunky and could only be dropped from C-130 transport planes that are slow, noisy, and easy to be shot at.

So by the early 2000s, the GBU-43 MOAB was designed to replace it. It had a larger payload and could be carried by any large bomber in the USAF. But development delayed its entry to 2008 and by that time insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan had moved to urban areas, and we weren't willing to bomb them as the Russians did in Chechnya in the 1990s because of the ghosts of Vietnam War past. Nothing will have your soldiers getting shot by everyone faster than wiping out urban populations like in WWII. And targets in the mountains were hit by gunships, strike fighters, or special forces. So 2017 was the first time this bomb came about.

And the funny thing is that this isn't the biggest non-nuke boom in our arsenal. That award goes to the GBU-57, Massive Ordinance Penetrator - MOP, that is 12,000 heavier and designed to bury within armored or dug hiding places with kinetic energy from the fall and weight to detonate deep within the target. This one was designed with deep bomb shelters, like the ones for the leadership in North Korea in mind.

Now, I'm overstressed by the chais of people thinking the new prez condones horrible behaviour. But military and tech history are my comfy stomping grounds and I can say that we are okay.

The MOAB is just a tool, like any other weapon in our arsenal to safeguard our assets and influence. And be jerks once in a while (like in Grenada). Trump won't change our tactics much as hearts and minds are a way to win a war and the outdated WWII style Trump and Co. grew up with won't work today. Many brass in the Pentagon know it (or else Mosul, Baghdad, Kabul, & Kandahar wouldve been wiped out ages ago) and the ghost (mistakes and traumas) of the Vietnam War serves as a continusl reminder of the last time those tactics failed us.

And I agree, ISIS recieves funding elsewhere, this requires intelligence work, not bombs. Yet.
