Companies have been selling 'followers' since the end of the last decade on Facebook, but I'm shocked, just utterly devastated and shocked it happens on other social media.

And people just accept this as truth? Where did he find a million people to pay to follow him? Is there an agency he went through? Are there Craigslist ads he put out? Where do I sign up for this sort of thing to get paid?

Can anyone show me how I can get a job as a Twitter shill? If there's that many millions of them, it should be the easiest job in the world to get. I don't mean theoretically, I mean exactly how I can get paid to be a Twitter account follower and/or make Tweets.

I bet if a million people walking down the street were asked this, none of them would have any idea.

Yes, there is various marketing companies that offer followers and tweets about your company or self. I used them in the past when I managed a shop.

They're not real accounts unless you have experience running a bot farm there's zero money in it for you as just a single follower. It's not just Trump, it's every social media celebrity. The Kardashians, the Lady Gaga, you name it, if it's on social media and has 10 million+ followers there's a good chance up to half of those followers are just 0's and 1's.

Now that sounds more likely. But still all over you can see conversations like:

"You're a shill"
"No I'm not"
"Yes you are"
"No I'm not"

Maybe it's just bots arguing with bots.

The companies bill themselves as "reputation management." I don't think they need to hire that many people. Algorithms can probably make a stream of convincing, bland tweets, or whatever they need to build a plausible fake persona. Then those accounts can tweet positive things about products, such as politicians and athlete's foot cream, or write good reviews of your restaurant to camouflage any bad reviews.

^We have people on this site who will do that for free, an unexploited resource!

I used a local company, but I would have to dig up the old forms to find it... The followers are just bots, complete bogus. I want to say the cost was about $2 per 100 followers and then $3-5 per message. It helps get your name out and look more established. The one I used, had use trending locally for a couple days.

Well that sucks, I was hoping to make some money.

Something I thought of though. With Trump's tweets making headlines all the time, he must have a zillion followers.

Even I check out his twitter account occasionally and he's the only person on earth who's account I ever check out. From my perspective that says something about its level of popularity/infamy.

It's reasonable to assume most followers are fake, half are probably legit... You could probably start your own social media company. Just about everyone one I looked at was young, still in college. The one we used handled all our social media and offered a sign spinner (person who does tricks with a sign by the road) for a monthly flat fee. Get a few accounts, cross post them (get them to promote each other) and enjoy.

No surprise Donald uses it to transmit his information then.

Seems plenty of Trump's Twitter followers are as real as those unregistered voters who gave Clinton the popular vote.

Or the paid supporters at anti-Trump rallies.

edit-- and a little tit-for-tat, Trump hired an acting talent agency to hire actors for his presidential announcement. One things for certain: the Fund for the Public Interest pays better than Trump.
