Longmont couple gets 10 years in prison for starving son with autism

Quote:
In court papers, doctors at Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora said they’d never seen such a severe case of malnutrition.

Doctors told police the 17-year-old boy weighed just 88 pounds when he was admitted to the hospital on Aug. 22. The couple initially brought their son to Longmont United Hospital after he lost consciousness.

One doctor told police the boy’s condition was, “consistent with someone who would have been in a concentration camp for several years.”

The teenager had not seen a doctor in at least eight years. He hadn’t had formal schooling, dental care or in-home assistance for the same time period.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, the boy’s parents told detectives he consumed only sugary drinks and junk food for more than a decade.

The parents told police their son refused to consume anything but Cheez-It, Cheetos, Doritos and sodas.

Investigators said the couple failed to seek assistance to get the boy the nutrients his body needed.

Both parents pleaded guilty in the case and were sentenced to 10 years in prison on Tuesday.

I hope they're put on the same diet. The arrest warrant says according to the dad's driver's licence he weighs 340 lbs. Figures. From her picture mom looks to be in the same obese ballpark. They could have at least put liquid supplements in the kid's sugary drinks.

To be able to make all the normal stuff, from scratch, in a reasonable way, should be considered a basic living skill, afaic.

So, without torturing them, with any outrightly-strange food, all of the finicky eaters, who have come through my house, got hungry, eventually.

What was the special nurse supposed to accomplish, any differently. Or, what is the formal method?

I hope they get locked up for life and they get sugary drinks and junk food every time they ask for something.

They said their kid refused to consume anything but junk food. But if my son were that picky, I would be going to the doctor to get help. Plus if they were that poor, I am sure they would have qualified for state child health insurance.

This seems a situation where the kid would have been much better off being institutionalized, which is what ended up happening anyways. Didn't it say the parents were getting welfare money each month to care for him? Like all they cared about was how much cash they were getting.
