NEWLY released CIA documents show the US suspected Adolf Hitler survived WWII and fled to South America, renewing conspiracy theories.
The file, written by Caracas bureau chief David Brixnor, was wired to Washington in 1955 alongside a picture allegedly showing Hitler with the CIA source Citroen.
Handwritten notes on the document claim a second confidential informant — given the codename CIMELODY-3 — was “fairly reliable”.
The document adds that the picture included “was taken with Hitler not too long ago”.
It added Citroen’s belief that the Allies would be unable to prosecute Hitler for war crimes because ten years had passed since the end of the war.

Given that the Soviet Union and the United States governments (with assistance from the Vatican) made a mad dash in the final days of World War II to gather up and control the "brain trust" figures in the German Reich military, give them new names and relocate them to the Soviet Union, the United States and various nations of South America, why wouldn't Adolf Hitler have known about the option that hundreds of thousands of such figures utilized? Kill himself and his wife while his top leaders skedaddled to the four corners of the planet? Nah.

This makes zero sense.

There was never AN option. There were differing "options" secretly offered by different parties. The Soviets and the US competed against each other to grab particular people: rocket scientists. They definetly were not working together as you're implying. The Vatican was working against both the Soviets and the US to offer refuge to other Nazis for their own very different reasons. Hitler couldn't build rockets. So neither the Soviets nor the western allies would have had any use for keeping him alive (except the west would have wanted him alive to stand trial, the soviets would summarily executed him).

Why would he keep his trademark mustache and hairstyle if he is trying to hide in another country?

Good question!

Maybe that guy in the pic was the 1955 winner of the local Buenos Aires "Adolf Hitler look alike contest". And someone passed on the pic to the CIA , and the CIA fell for it.

Its not impossible that Hitler could have escaped the Bunker in Berlin.Hard, but not impossible, to imagine. But this story is just a little too much like that comic strip I read as a kid in the Sixties in which the P.I. hero is shown several 8 by 10 glossies of an aging South American dude who "could be a 70 year old Hitler". Or like the novel "the Portage to San Cristobel of A.H.". Just a little too sensational to be true.

Now...if you showed me a pic of a geriatric Hitler in Paraguay drinking beers with.... Elvis! THEN I would buy it! :D

That would HAVE to be true!

LOL, obvious fake news. Everybody knows that in 1955 Hitler was living in Mexico City in a mansion owned by Trump's father. There are even pictures of little Donald sitting in Uncle Adolf's lap but the CIA is refusing to release them.

So why all the fanfare about hiding these documents all these years?

Does the CIA deliberately release fake news to throw people off?

The same accusation was made about Roswell files claiming it was Project Mogul - a spy balloon
Many feel the authorities haven't convinced everyone of that one either

I have serious doubts that the man in the photo is Hitler. The fact is, Hitler at the end of his life was in poor health, suffering from Parkinson's, and possibly addicted to methamphetamines. I don't believe he would have lived into 1955.

Which is all very well, but it doesn't address my original question, i) why would the CIA seriously consider this photo to be worthy of consideration (after all they are more savvy about these things than us average joes?) ii) considering it looks fake then why make this classified for all these years?

Well, the article had said that the contact who gave them this information was considered reliable, so that may answer why.
As for why the CIA had kept this secret all these years - former CIA higher up, Victor Marchetti, after he had broken with the agency and wrote a tell all book, The CIA And The Cult Of Intelligence, claimed the CIA was obsessed with secrecy just for the sake of secrecy. As for why release this now - possibly the agency realized this was just foolishness with zero intelligence value. Perhaps the contact who provided this information has died, and so the agency saw no reason to keep his cover uncompromised.
