there is no way to truly know what is going through the young-un fellow's mind.
i have no experience or education in diplomatic relations, but here is what i cursorily think:
let "kim" have his "protection".
now he seems satisfied that his nuclear program is complete (he said he has all of america in his range now), he may
be now expected to simmer down, and not be so paranoid about invasion or other external threats.
it seems to me that the primary objective of his nuclear armament quest was to feel "safe" from incursions.
he has obviously been indoctrinated to the propaganda that drove his father and other earlier ancestors.
ie: "the world is evil and depraved and they want to come here and propound their barbarism upon us."
kim did add (crucially) to his address that "we will not use these weapons unless an act of hostility is engaged upon us" (or very similar). was that another ill dropped olive branch that was meant to convey "calm down everyone. we have no conquestual aspirations..we only seek to preserve our sovereignty"
but unfortunately he had to add "we have the whole mainland USA within range now, and i always have the button at my desk"
in my opinion, he would have been wiser to just say "we have finished all testing concerning our nuclear aspirations, and we are now satisfied that it achieves our desired aim"
that would both seem like he was saying "the brinkmanship is over", as well as saying "you do not know what we have achieved... so be very careful"
trump would have been better off saying "congratulations kim! now settle down over there. we look forward to potential new avenues of negotiation".
that would seem like a statement of admiration that he achieved his aims despite the tribulations, and also an invitation to now, without paranoia, start mingling with the world.
it would also seem like a veiled threat if you read it like "now we both are armed, we might as well slug it out if you so desire"
the media would be agonizing over the possible interpretations of those statements.
trump unfortunately went into it with too much bluster in my opinion.
so let N.K have it's nuclear defense and deterrent plans achieved just like israel and france and russia and china and india and even bloody pakistan.
i can somewhat understand jong un's position of feeling vulnerable in a world of nations that could eradicate them.
so let them have the nuclear capability.
just let them know, if ever he bumps the button, even accidentally, that his nation will be wiped off the face of the earth.....and then let's talk.
it is good that N.K has proposed sending a delegation, and even maybe participants into the S.K olympics.
it is widely believed that N.K people are in the dark ages due to internet censorship and the like.
they do not know that the west is so happy and free (apparently). that is why their loyalty remains chained to their master.
well how does N.K propose to televise it's participation in the olymics to it's own citizens?
can N.K keep from it's citizens the fact that they are in the olympics?
of course not. they will want to see.
they will all see the happy smiling faces and friendliness of the rest of the world as a byproduct of this coverage.
i think that kim fellow is now ready to mix with the world now he feels safe.
anyway, trump may have a slant on all this that i fail to see.
maybe if trump admits "defeat" by saying "happy entry into the nuclear arms race...we can be friends still", then certain aberrant mindsets (like jong il) can say "see!! ! i made them eat their shoes....now i will crush them!! ! i see they are weak"
but what could NK hope to gain by engaging the USA?
even if they won, they would have to enslave about 250 million people in order to keep the place running.
and of course the rest of the world would join in and obliterate them.
one thing that was never reported or discussed by jong il was "targeting" technology.
he advertised everything else in advance.
he made sure the world could see his progress with the ballistic ability of long range missiles.
he has not proven he can hit the USA because he has never launched a missile that far.
he has not proven that he can refine the thermonuclear device to any great degree.
every detonation that we have seen, is only of atomic bomb proportions, and not that of thermonuclear bombs.
there is no way a 20 megaton device detonated underground would fail to erupt a fireball of cataclysmic energy above the ground level.
the biggest device we saw detonated lifted the earth above it and dropped it back down once spent, but a fusion device would have lit the sky with a blinding ball of energy.
he threatened to test his targeting accuracy near guam (with non explosive missiles), but never did it.
guam is a different story to a .6 orbit of the earth before reentry.
so he may (which i doubt as i said) have the range to hit the mainland of the U.S, but i doubt he has the targeting ability to guide the missile to any target with accuracy to within a 1000 mile radius from that distance.
but if we pretend to swallow his bluster, he may just feel like he has done enough to scare the world.
"good work kim! you have earned your badge of respect from the foremost countries of the world. you are safe now"
maybe he would meekly emerge from behind his curtain and say "hello" for the first time.
the only alternative is to say "we will crush you if you do not dismantle your arsenal", and that could only lead to dire conflict.
or just one day out of the blue, the USA could, without warning, shuttle off 25 10-20 megaton devices to target the most populous cities in N.K, and then the world would certainly gang up on the USA.
russia, china, india, france, england and everyone would rally to crush the US if that atrocity occurred.
the world against the USA would win.
if the USA has the proclivity for such pugilance then no one else is safe until it is gone.
so who knows.
maybe there is a tongue in cheek wit thing going on between those 2.
trumps statement certainly reeked of the desire to say something "witty"
