Just saw this story the other day about a man with Aspergers who worked 3 days trial for free in a B&M Bargains store, had his name down on the rota for actual paid work the following week only to be told an hour before his shift they didn’t require his services.
What’s people’s thoughts on this?
Regardless of the fact the guy has Aspergers, I think it’s unfair that employers can get away with this free labour in the guise of ‘trial shifts’.
Pay people for the trial, if they’re no good don’t hire them.
This is a pretty bad thing to do to anyone but obviously hits the guy with Aspergers harder as he's struggled to find a job and was let down by this one at the last minute.
This reminds me of a similar experience I had when I was sixteen - I’d worked 3 months over Christmas (paid) and basically they didn’t bother to inform me that I didn’t have a job after the 3 months was up.
I can’t remember if I was down to work, but I remember going in and not finding my name on the rota and when I asked I was simply told ‘you don’t work here anymore’
Not even a thank you or goodbye!

In the United States, trial employees must be paid courtesy wages (which can be quite handsome, actually) though they might not receive "soft" benefits like personal/illness/vacation time off.
I am glad that some appointed and elected officials are acting to resolve the published situation. I hope advocacy groups like Better Than Zero are successful in their work.
And, I wonder how many "trial employees" will be working for the upcoming "Royal Wedding." That question, placed in the right context with certain news media, might just garner some uncomfortable political attention.
In my opinion, the U.K. has become a joke. My current batch of HRH cousins have ruined a once-great country. The wedding will win television ratings and sell millions of waving wee Union Jacks. But, how many Brits will remember Harry's photographed Nazi-uniform gag and photographed Las Vegas orgy? Apart from Diana, I am ashamed to call them relatives.
